Thinning Hair

My hairdresser has noticed that my hair is thinning . I have NASH fibrosis. I am 66, female and I wondered if anyone else has had the same. If so, can anyone recommend any supplements which will help without further affecting my poor liver. Thanks in advance.

I never told anyone I was ill when I had NASH cirrhosis but my hairdresser said she knew something was wrong as my hair was thinning and changed texture. I've now had a transplant and lost lots of hair, only suggestion I have is shampoo containing biotin, you can get biotin supplements but would need to ask your doctor before taking anything.Hope it stops soon

hi I have liver fibrosis and have been losing my hair since my mid 30s. I’m now 54. I take biotin every day and it has slowed down the loss. Obviously age is also a factor. And I’ve just come through menopause too which didn’t help!

I am 65, female and also have thinning hair- perhaps for about 10y-- like you, I believe it to be NASH/cirrhosis related. I used those caffeine shampoos and Regaine, which seemed to help a bit. For a while, I didn't notice my hair thinning, but now, 3m post transplant, the thinning seems to have come back with a vengeance! I will also speak to post transplant teams about biotin supplements...

Thanks for your reply. Hopefully the biotin will help. It really upset me when she told me my hair was thinning. Just another thing that comes with liver disease I suppose and it takes a bit of adjusting xx.

Be careful with Regain as when I researched it, it has trace of alcohol in which is a big no no if the cirrhosis is caused by alcohol, like mine was. I’m 58 and my hair was/is falling out. The GP tested my bloods for thyroid etc but they came back ok. I spoke to the liver nurses and hair loss is sadly part and parcel of liver disease. Once I have accepted this, I notice that the hair loss seems to have slowed down. My hairdresser actually stated that the Regain and other expensive shampoos/treatments etc are not effective and are merely money making. Although if people are happy to use them then it’s an individual choice

Ok! Wasn't aware of possibility of alcohol in Regaine, though my liver issues aren't alcohol related...Something else to bear in mind though! Thanks for the information. Best wishes

Is hair thinning a usual symptom of liver sclerosis?

My ex-husband has liver sclerosis and now his hair is thinning rapidly. Is this to be expected?
