hi everyone. I have cirrhosis. I have noticed in the last year my hair has been getting thinner. Does anyone know whether this can be caused by liver disease? I have tried to find out but haven’t had any luck getting an answer. Thanks.

Hello Darcy, my hair was thinning a bit when I was sick 2 years ago, but once my health improved and things went back to normal, my hair got thicker. Now it is normal and very thick. My hairdresser has commented on it.

Best of luck!

Yes, liver disease can cause hairloss due to being deficient in vitamins.

Thank you sophiaS1980. Do you know of any particular vitamins that can affect it?

A,E,D but you have to be careful taking vitamin E in large amounts if you have cirrhosis, large amounts can thin your blood, which most with cirrhosis have low platelets and clotting disorder.

Yes it can cause hair loss. Mine really thinned when I was first diagnosed with cirrhosis. My cirrhosis was caused by alcohol and I stopped drinking immediately on diagnosis. I was extremely unwell for a while…I’d manage to contract a deep rooted infection and my liver went into acute on chronic liver failure. With a lot of hard work… really good diet, exercise and no alcohol my liver started to recover. As my health improved my hair grew back. My hairdresser noticed new growth and a distinct thickening and improved feel of my hair. I’m pleased to say my hair is now back to normal.

After 10 months of abstinence, a healthy diet and a recovering liver, my hair has started to grow back. I shaved my legs and under arms for the first time in about 18 months! I've never been so happy!! Nails are good too. Improvement will come in time. Don't worry too much x

I have MRE diagnosis of F2-F3 fibrosis diagnosed six months back NAFLD, have been on restricted diet, weight reduced more than 10%, had pruritis or hives initially for 2-3 months which is not more but for last month having fall of hair consistent. Lifestyle modification, Diabetes control with semaglutide and saroglitazar for hepatic health. Any suggestions!!

Yes. My hair started to thin and it ‘snapped off’. It was long and thick, luckily I didn’t loose it but after my transplant, it grew back thick and glossy with lots of new baby hair.

Like others, my hair too was falling out massively before I was diagnosed with cirrhosis. I just put it down to getting older. But after my diagnosis and being put on various nutritional supplements, after about six months my hairdresser noticed it was getting thicker at the roots. Three years on and my hair is very good. Not as thick as it was, but normal thickness. This suits me fine as I felt my hair was always too thick before I was ill.
