Fibroscan score 19.5. Awaiting appointment with consultant

Last year I was diagnosed as diabetic.

Last month I had liver function tests and as a result sent for fibroscan.

I was told that the score was 19.5 and I was F4 - cirrhosis.

My GP would not comment as not a specialist in this field but has arranged for a full range of blood tests, liver scan and consultation with hepatologist.

Blood samples taken this morning.

No dates for either scan or consultant.

As the highest fibro scan score is 75 I am assuming that I could have early-stage cirrhosis and it might be reversible.

It would be good to know the significance of the 19.5 score.

Comments / advice would be appreciated.

Thank you

If you look up fibroscan score chart online you'll see that there are different bars for different liver conditions. So, kPa and what degree of fibrosis that reflects varies from condition to condition.

ALSO, if your blood results reflect any ongoing inflammation then your kPa score could even be falsely elevated. Fibroscan can't differentiate between actual fibrosity and ongoing inflammation.

Hopefully you can reverse some of the damage or at least slow or stop progression if cause is identified.

Hi Katie

Thank you for your response.

Having seen the amazing swings in my haemoglobin A1c levels, I am not getting too concerned until the results of todays tests.

Meanwhile, continuing with improving my lifestyle…

I had 19.4 score, they were sure it was cirrhosis, but did biopsy to be certain, it turned out 3-4 Fibrosis with bridging not good, but not as bad as consultant thought. So if you show no other stigmatic signs of cirrhosis, or symptoms this may be the next course of action for you and your consultant to discuss.

I was told I was 19.5 and was told I was borderline cirrhosis the only thing is I was told 2 years after the fibroscan I had some sort of mix up covering each others backs so I continued to drink for 2 years thinking I was ok I had the fibroscan in 2018 and was told over a phone call about the result in 2020 my last ultrasound was 3 months ago and I still haven't heard anything the wee girl who done the ultrasound says theres nothing exciting in that scan so I just take her word for it to be honest I have given up I have relapsed a good few times now I just turned 60 there and relapsed again had my bloods done before the ultrasound and all where ok it put my head away hearing the word cirrhosis I even paid for my funeral so at 19.5 borderline and you have been abstinent from drinking alcoholic I would say you had a good chance of getting it better goodluck 👍

Your reply was very therapeutic!

Thanks, it made me laugh (in a sympathetic way) as that damn word cirrhosis does make one immediately think the worse…

A friend of mine died from it 30+ years ago and it was not a good way to go…

I think a dose of covid had the affect of changing my taste buds and I now drink very little.

You have cirrhosis!!!!!!!!!!And always will have it now.

Drinking "very little" is not good, it's a slow suicide.

You can stop it getting worse by lifestyle changes but your liver has proven its being damaged and even "very little" will now cause similar damage to a past binge session.

You must regard your liver as allergic to alcohol, (it is!)

I quit and my consultant now says I will die WITH cirrhosis and not because of it.

Not what you're looking for?
