fibroscan score and other scores

Hi all.

My partner Nick has had his fibroscan score which is 32.8, CAP score is 289, child - pugh 5A, UKELD 45. Anyone know if these scores are dangerously high? I am trying to prepare myself for whats to come.

Also, his stomach is swollen most of the time now. I am presuming this could be ascites. He has recently also had overactive bladder and urgency to pee. Is that something Cirrhosis can do to you?

Thank you to all of you who answer it helps so much .

The fibroscan result of 32.8 kPa confirms the cirrhosis diagnosis. 289 CAP also points to a high amount of fatty change in the liver (Steatosis grade 3 - more than 67% of liver is fatty).

Child Pugh A is as good as it gets with cirrhosis - Child Pugh goes from A-C with C being the most severe end of the scale.

UKELD score of 45 - not at the point a person would be considered for transplant on the old system where a score of 49 was the minimum required for transplant listing.

Needing to pee a lot can be a symptom of diabetes so he could perhaps do with tests for that as it can go hand in hand with cirrhosis. Is his tummy bloating/potential ascites being checked? I take it he's not on diuretics (obviously they make you pee more).

Thank you Katie. he hasn't been checked for ascites. We are awaiting an appointment for MRI because there is a 24 mm irregular area in left lobe. They want to check it isnt cancer. Then we will see the consultant once he sends us an appointment. the waiting for appointment is so frustrating as im sure everyone knows. Not on diuretics. He says he gets urgency to go. I was thinking could be infection. I will encourage him to go to GP about this

Hi there pussycat, in my opinion ( and it is just that ) if you suspect ascites you should take him straight to A and E which is what happened to me . Ascites can be life threatening and should not be taken lightly. Not wishing to scare in anyway but that is what I would do. Thanks Taff.

Hi puss 🐈

With a UKELD score of 45 and a Child Score of A (5) then even with any scarring that may be present, his liver seems to still be coping pretty well. So that at least should be seen positively. If it was struggling, you'd be seeing a much higher UKELD score.

You mention an irregular area in his left lobe. Was that picked up on ultrasound? If so, the ultrasound would've also been able to pick up any significant ascites. Small amounts it may miss, but small amounts are unlikely to be visible outside either. So the chances of what you are seeing being ascites is probably reasonably low. Particularly given his other test results.

You can have urinary issues with liver disease yes. But at this stage I'd probably not jump to that conclusion just yet. I'd let the medics consider other options first. There could be a relationship, yes, but equally it could still be something unrelated. You wouldn't want those possibilities to be completely dismissed without further investigation.

Hope thats helpful and good luck with the MRI. Whilst we do of course always worry about things like cancer, there are a lot of other, more benign, things it could be too. Its standard practice to get these things checked. Whilst ultrasound is handy a picking up anomalies, it's not as good at differentiating what they are.
