So had an ultrasound today following concerns over blood tests. Already knew from 2017 that had liver cysts including one that was 8cm back then.
Heard today that have more liver cysts and largest has grown to 17cm and pushing other organs out of sync.
I am told that now need an MRI to decide what to do, but probably will have a de roofing of the largest cyst and possibly couple of others.
Has anyone else had de roofing done? Bit scared about pain and scarring. They say they cannot rule out cancer but think the largest cyst has burst and caused some shadowing.
Positive message was no sign of fatty liver, so I’m hanging on to one positive 😳

I have polycystic liver disease and had deroofing of 10cysts about 6years ago. They also drained off about 1litre of fluid. The procedure was done laparoscopically, so they didn't think it would be that painful. But it was - I needed to have a morphine pump, which definitely helped. If you already have pain from the cysts, which I did - I would recommend that you ask the anaesthetist to have a pain pump when you wake up.
The recovery was relatively quick and I was able to reduce my pain meds quite soon after for about a year. There was minimal scarring at the op site and I don't think there was any internally.
The cysts to grow back eventually and I ended up having a needle aspiration under CT last year which helped again.
I hope this has helped. Let me know if you have other questions.
Thank you so much for sharing. Hope you are comfortable now?
I think I probably have PLD also as there are a lot of cysts of varying sizes. The biggest is 17cms long and apparently has burst. I am in discomfort but bearable most of the time. As most people find, night time is worse as no distractions 🙄
I don’t take pain killers at mo as it’s bearable.
Great idea about the morphine pump! I had an endoscopy last year. Told that was painless and never come close to punching someone when they started rummaging around. Suspect that the cysts might have caused part of that pain, but it was horrendous. Going to take anything on offer if I have that again!
I’m sure it will be fine. It’s just fear of the unknown and what to expect. I was going to see if I can speak to consultant but fearful I might be seen as a pest and don’t want to irritate them. I’ll have to wait patiently for appt I suppose.
Anyway, take care and thanks so much for response 😀
My liver pain is relatively well controlled with regular painkillers.
If you don't want to contact your consultant, you could get in touch with the liver nurse specialist. They might be able to advise about some pain killers to help in the evening as its not good to suffer if you don't have to.
