Gall bladder removal

Hello

I have an 8mm polyp in my gall bladder as wel as tiny gallstones. My latest ultrasound a few days ago noted that surgery could be an option soon. I have no symptoms but the polyp has to be removed.

Has anyone had a laparoscopic surgery of this type and what was your experience?

Hi VeeWat...I had a 10mm polyp 3 years ago in my gall bladder..like you no symptoms. The consultant said if it got to 10mm the chances of it turning malignant was quite high..so at 73 with a number of medical conditions..blood pressure..palpitations..type 2 I decided to opt for the cholecystectomy.I had NO problems during the surgery..just reacted to the anaesthetic by vomiting for most of the day afterwards!..but came home..felt great..and have had no problems since! Hope this reassures youxx

Hi ChaddersI finally had my gallbladder removed June 7 and everything okay so far, just had a couple days of gas pains and nausea from anesthesia for one day. I’m 68.

Yes I had a 12mm polyp, no stones no symptoms. They monitored with scans for 6 months then when it increased in size my consultant decided it had to go immediately so I had an urgent op 5 months ago.The op was fine, it's usually done as a day case but I had to stay overnight as I have heart problems, the gas they pump in can be very painful for a few days but it does go.

I had terrible bile acid diarrhoea in the months afterwards, its a well known consequence of having no gallbladder, I now take a bile acid binder which has sorted the problem.

It's best to get it out because they can't tell if it's malignant until it's out and underneath the microscope so not worth the risk of leaving it there !

Good luck

What’s the name of the bile acid binder?

It's Cholestyramine, Questran Light is the one I take. If you google it you will see it's used to treat high cholesterol, itching due to liver disease and diarrhoea caused by excess bile acid. It's a powder to be mixed with liquid and not very pleasant to drink but you get used to it and it works so that's the main thing.

How did they find the polyp? Ultrasound? Just curious. Also, my friend from work had her gallbladder removed. The only thing she said was she had to watch overly fatty foods as it can make her kind of sick. Best of luck :)
