Hi, my hubby has AIH and is prescribed Azathioprine immune suppressant. He hasn't had a liver transplant but has cirrhosis. His consultant told him in May to start taking Vitamin D daily. So far he hasn't had any problems taking it. I'm afraid that's all I can tell you. I would definitely check with your consultant before taking anything though. Kind regards Donna

Hi,

We would suggest to discuss the use of any additional 'over the counter' supplements with your own liver team and GP to ensure theu are safe and appropriate to take.

Best wishes.

His Dr .does not recommend to take vitamin D Without consulting a doctor . Because if taking too much vitamin D is not good . 🙂

Dr said If it back to normal level my husband need to stop .

I have taken calcichew (vitamin D and calcium)tablets daily since 2012 on the consultants advice-but that might be because a bone scan revealed osteopaenia after my cirrhosis diagnosis. So I would ask your GP-I contact a hepatology specialist nurse for advice-but I realise different hospitals have different systems in place.

Thanks for reply I only take 10 ug once a day if I remember I also take a vitamin c tablet I'm 66 now and still working outside so I figure my liver must be OK as I feel fine .this corvid is messing things up for appointments relating to my liver blood test mainly to check tacrolimus levels etc but I'm just thankful I survived liver cancer and the transplant I was so lucky and pretty fit right up to the operation so I think I can count my blessings take care everyone

You sound like you’re doing great-I have cirrhosis so I have had telephone appointments-but then had my usual scan today-which had been cancelled 6 months ago.

Take care and hope you get your blood test done soon!

Hi there.

Good to know that you're doing well :-)

I'm just over 2 years post transplant now and I take 2 Calceos tablets daily (calcium and Vit D) because I was diagnosed with osteoporosis. The Vit D content doesn't seem to have given me any problems liver wise but it would be as well to check with your liver specialist as we are are all different and take various different meds and some can react on others.

Keep on climbing :-)

Alf.

Thanks Alfred yes you are so right about us all being different it's funny how we all react differently to medication it's certainly not a case of one size fits all quite fascinating really .hope you are well after the transplant sometimes it's like a dream and it didn't really happen to me until I see the scar 😂 we have a lot to be thankfull for take care Alfred enjoy life

I'm nearly 8 years post transplant, and have been taking vitamin D3 since that time. No side effects or contraindications with the meds. Since D3 is naturally made under the skin through direct sunlight, and trasplantees are supposed to keep covered up, there is no other way to get it except by supplementation.

Thanks for reply very encouraging to hear i must admit I do get some sun exposure through working outside but I use a high factor sunscreen ,factor 50 , and a hat . I intend to work for as long as I'm able to but don't want to put myself in danger by exposture to the sun is think a happy medium is the way

I can’t quote the source of the advice as I have forgotten but I do know I was advised to take 10ug (micrograms) per day vit D to reduce liver cancer risk as I have cirrhosis. The current interest in vit D to possibly mitigate the effects of COVID-19 is a bonus as far as I’m concerned.

At the end of last year I broke the ball of my humerus and other bits. I was advised to take VIT D and calcium together ( not by my liver doc) as I also now have osteopenia, so I did. About 6 months back after one of my usual blood tests my liver doc phoned me at home (he never has before) he told me to stop doing what I was doing with the vit D immediately as I had toxic levels. Even now on my most recent test my vit d is still in the toxic level but has come down slightly. Please please check with your liver doctor first.

Hi, My liver transplant was done about 1-2/2 yrs ago. The doctors actually prescribed a vitamin D + Calcium for me, which I have been taking ever since. When I'm outside I also use a 50 sunscreen and still develop carcinoma on various part of my body. On Tuesday I'm going in to have another removed. Dr. said it is due to some of the medication, which lowers the immune system. Hope this helps! All the best, Inge

Thanks very much yes it helps I've also had a couple of skin grafts on my scalp due to sun damage so I'm careful to wear a hat and sunscreen I was on azathioprine as well as tac but they stopped the azathioprine as I don't need it now good luck on Tuesday and take care
