Vitamin D3: Hi everyone , just going... - British Liver Trust
Vitamin D3
I know my hubby is prescribed Adcal D3 which is both calcium and vitamin D3. He takes it to protect his bones as he is on steroids for his auto immune condition. He's got some degree of osteopenia (bone thinning) due to cirrhosis.
Hi.I am also prescribed D3 supplements, taken daily for the last 12 months. My deficiency in vitamin D was picked up during regular cirrhosis bloods. I was told by the consultant that vit D deficiency is a common occurance amongst many other cirrhosis complications.
Hope all is well.
I could bore everyone with the long Vitamin D story, but here's the short version. 😀
The liver takes the vitamin d from food and sunshine (yes a rarity in the the UK) and processes it into 25-Hydroxycholecalciferol, this is what is measured in the blood test. Normal range is between 50 and 220 nmol/L If your liver is working sub-optimally then you may therefore be deficient in D3, which can be an issue with bone health as it can affect the absorption of calcium and phosphate. Your weight, ethnic origin and other autoimmune conditions can have a bearing on the correctly level of D3 for you.
I take Vitamin K with my D3 as K helps with the absorption of D.
