Serum Gamma GT - test result above "normal"

My last LFT (Serum Gamma GT level) tests have all been “abnormal”, the last test was in Oct 2016 - it was 192 u/L (normal being 0-39), and before then the last nine tests were also “abnormal”, and I haven't been re-tested for this since the one in October 2016.

What does this type of abnormal result mean, what could be underlying issues? Also I don't drink alcohol (only very occasionally). I do remember vaguely the doctor asking me how much alcohol I drank when these tests were coming back abnormal, and he didn't seem to believe me. I had forgotten that i hadn't been retested, and it was only when I looked online at my medical records that I saw it.

My other LF tests done more recently (11 October) were "normal" Serum Alt was 35 u/L (normal 0-49) and Serum Total Billirubin was 9 umol/L (normal range 0-20) .

I have now written to the surgery to ask to get retested for the Gamma GT, would like to know some more though of what these type of abnormalities in this test means.

Hi,

Given that your GGT has been at that level for 9 or 10 tests, perhaps this is just your personal 'normal'.

Lots of things can cause temporarily raised GGT, it can be your body fighting infection or whatever, but it usually returns to the normal range pretty quickly.

I think it needs looking into, but I'd doubt further blood tests would reveal or prove anything diagnostics-wise.

Has the possibility of an ultrasound scan been mentioned to you at all?

Yes, I think I had a scan quite a few years ago, but can't be definite - I have Fibromyalgia and brain fog is a big symptom, and so things tend to merge into one!

Hello clarabelle17,

Welcome to the forum where you will be able to get advice and support from others with experience of liver disease.

However, no matter how well intentioned, this is not a medical forum and none of the members are qualified to diagnose or give specific medical advice.

Forum users are advised to NOT post test results or scans and request an interpretation from other members. This is clearly stated in the guidelines to both the British Liver Trust forum and HealthUnlocked.

Test results can vary according to both the individual’s whole health and the specific laboratory / medical team analysing the results. To avoid misinterpretation and undue concerns, results can only properly be understood by a qualified medical practitioner who has full knowledge of your unique medical history and circumstances.

Please don’t be discouraged from using the forum as there are members with a great deal of understanding and knowledge of living with liver disease as a patient or carer. They will be able to give you the benefit of that experience with understanding and empathy that can only come from those with first hand involvement.

You will find a lot of useful information about relevant tests and liver disease in general on our website.

My GGT has been up in the 100s+ for many years, despite every test imaginable no cause can be found. Sometimes it just is what it is 🤷‍♀️

Elevated GGT can also be a sign of insulin resistance or pre diabetes, usually seen in those with fatty liver
