Enlarged Liver

Hi everyone, I hope you are all feeling well. I had an ultra sound in July, I asked for a copy of the report and it states that my liver is 16.6 cm with moderate fat infiltration and sparing. I have a constant dull ache on my right side, that sometimes goes around also to my back. Very tired and sore joints too. I was taking prednisone for about 18 months for GCA and also methotrexate for about 6 months. It seems ever since then I have had fatty liver. I am worried it is progressing to possibly fibrosis or early cirrosis. Should I insist on getting abliver biopsy?

Hi. Misaryk. You should have been having fortnightly/ monthly liver function blood tests done throughout the time you were taking methotrexate as it can affect your liver function. If the blood test showed abnormality you should have been told to stop taking it until blood test showed your liver had returned to normal. If you are not taking methotrexate any more your liver should gradually return to normal. A healthy diet and no alcohol will also help your liver recover. I think you should probably see your gp about having regular blood tests ?

Hi, thanks for responding so quickly. I have been off the prednisone and methotrexate for about a year now. Found out last year I had an enlarged severe fatty liver when I went to the emergency with very bad pain on right hand side, they did the first ultra sound then and found out my liver was enlarged and fatty. When I was taking the pred and methotrexate I was getting rounding blood test done and quite a few times my ast and alt and get were abnormal. My supppsed hepatologist seems to not be very interested in my case. Has done absolutely nothing but another ultra sound, which showed liver is still enlarged and with fat infiltration. Should mention I am a woman, and was told to lose weight. Thing is I was fine until I started taking the prednisone and methotrexate. I can’t seem to lose the weight I gained from the pred.

Thank you for responding, I am going to talk with the hepatoligist again, to get more clarification.

I agree with what's been said already, ask your GP to do a liver function test, based on that a referral to a heptoligist.

In the meantime could you go to something like slimming World now your off the pred and maybe start walking each day, at least you'll have something to go back at them with.

I appreciate its very difficult, I'm still on I pred and take 6mp for an autoimmune liver disease.

I also piled on do much weight, its very hard to get back off.

Hi

Had ct done of pelvic area back in October. It showed liver lesion.i also have no energy, Tired, right lower rib pain, joint pain, lost lot of weight. Need to have blood work done find liver function.

Hi Tiger1012, sorry to hear about your health issues too. I have the same symptoms as you, except for weight loss. In fact the opposite and can’t seem to lose weight easily st all. I put on some weight when I was on prednisone, and it seems I will lose 2-3 pounds then the next week a pound is back. I hope things turn out for you. Let me know how you make out.
