Surgery : So my dad has been waiting for... - British Liver Trust
Surgery
Hello Soso,
I'm sorry to hear about your poor dad.
On the 2nd Oct 2016 I underwent a liver transplant due to alcohol-related liver disease.
Back in 2014, up until things started to go wrong, I had never heard of some of the medical conditions associated with alcohol-related liver disease. I happened to ask my then consultant Hepatologist why there wasn't more information about these conditions out there in the public domain. He just replied, "What would be the point, they won't take any notice anyway". This annoyed me a little as I believe it's all about power. Knowledge is power, and with power I believe a person can change. At least they'll no longer be ignorant, and won't be able to say, "I didn't know, no one told me".
So, I put together my own website about alcohol-related liver disease and have included a number of medical conditions and procedures. This can be found at: taep.co.uk
Under the section called, "Medical consequences" I have included a short video cover the TIPPS procedure, TiPPS stands for Transjugular Intrahepatic PortoSystemic Shunt. This is an American video, as I just couldn't find at the time any British videos around. The TIPPS procedure is now a pretty standard one, even though it may seem alarming at first.
I hope you find this site useful. I should point out that I'm not medically qualified, but I have fully researched all these subjects and have personal experience of having had them myself.
I hope your Father's strength improves as he'll need to be fit enough to under go the transplant surgery. Has you Father been accepted onto the transplant waiting list yet?
Best wishes
Richard
Oh i must check this out . I have the same. ALD.i have some strange things happen to me lol, one minute insomnia, next day i can't keep my eyes open. Oh and for some reason if i eat a "normal " size meal i get awful stomach pains. 😐. I have today and i just can't eat..
Hello Richard thank u this info is very helpful and was his kids are giving him our liver He can’t take it now cuz there saying his levels are very low that’s why we are waiting and he’s getting worst and I’m just helpless that’s why I’m here searching for answers
Sorry to hear about your dad.. ..
I had the tips procedure done a few years before transplant. It doesn't hurt and worked wonderful for a while .... It will probably do him good whilst they get his blood settled and him in a better state for transplant
I also had the TIPPS procedure done in October 2016 after a life threatening variceal bleed. Afterwards I had no varicies, ascites or any swelling. The stabilising of my condition enabled me to get fit enough to get listed in September 2017 and transplanted in October 2017 I hope your dad is able to get this procedure which is undertaken almost painlessly via a vein in the neck and he gets well enough to get listed.
Thank u paul for the info . There talking about the tips now but they said it’s also very dangerous for his life but if he don’t do it this is not life full of pain and water out of his body 2 times a week . So I think he should do it . For the transplant we are ready to give him our liver he has 5 kidswe are all ready but they say he is to weak and his body and levels are not ready he needs to wait but he can’t wait cuz of the pain that’s why they said let’s do the tipps
Its great they are talking about TIPPS. As far as I am aware it is nearly always sucessful in treating ascities and portal hypertension which can cause life threatening internal bleading. I followed a very strict diet afterwards which ( if you are in UK ) will be referred to by his consultant.
I hope everything goes well.
Paul
