I am a 40 yr old female: I have been drinking more than I should over the past year. I am starting to feel some discomfort in my upper right abdomen, a little run down and some tingling in my fingers. I have scheduled a doctors appointment but they were booked til January. Just wondering if anyone has experienced those symptoms? And if that indicates fatty liver or something more serious. I won’t be picking up a drink again 😭

Hi! I would try not to worry as long as you aren't feeling too bad and you are booked for January. If you feel really unwell can you go to the emergency room? Since you suspect that your liver is irritated, good that you are not drinking. It could be inflamed, could be fatty, hard to know without blood tests and maybe an ultrasound and/or fibroscan. Chances are you'll catch it soon enough to reverse damage if there is any but best to know exactly what is going on. In the meantime you can find info on a healthy liver diet on British Liver Trust and you could also call the nurse helpline with questions if you are in the UK. Lots of veggies and fruit, extra virgin olive oil, fish, white meat chicken are all good. Stay away from fatty fried foods, added sugar, saturated fats and refined grains (stick with brown rice, stone ground wheat, oats, etc). Good luck and try not to worry!
Most likely fatty liver or maybe slight alcoholic hepatitis. Lay off the drink for good and things will improve. Alcohol also makes you deficient in all sorts.of nutrients which could explain the nerve damage. thiamine being one of the things you can get deficient in.
Hello this was me last year in October. Raised liver enzymes, tingling hand and feet, pain in both upper right and left area. Yellow stool the works, i drank on and off for 20 years...I had a ct scan and mine was fatty liver. I'm also female 38 it took me a long time to actually go to see a dr as I was scared of the outcome but didn't turn out so bad atleast I know now and liver wasn't to badly damaged. Hope it's the same for you xx
Stop drinkin mate.
The British Liver Trust nurse helpline is super helpful. You've made a great decision to stop the alcohol. A healthy diet and exercise will help too whilst you wait for your appointment
I think you know the answer but if you’re worried enough to post on this forum, “if it indicates fatty liver, I won’t pick up the drink again” sounds like you’d like us to say “oh, it’s nothing, you’ll be fine, drink sensibly and all will be well”. We’re not docs but the fact you recognise you’ve been drinking too much and you’re posting on a liver forum suggests you know you should stop for now. See the docs, get bloods and US - if there’s absolutely nothing there, MAYBE you can drink after January but after a serious discussion with yourself about safe levels - you may find after 2 months you’re quite happy without it!
Wish you all the best
