Would a Hida scan show if there is a problem with your liver? I know it tests the gallbladder

Hi Linsenilss22-

From my understanding it is predominantly used to check out the gallbladder function, however it does show how well the liver is producing bile. I had a HIDA scan after I had an ultrasound and liver function blood test. The test can last anywhere from 90 minutes to two hours depending on how quickly the bile empties out of the gallbladder into the small intestine. It's not the "go to" test for liver from my understanding. As I was watching the scan though I could see the dye in my liver and it can indicate a malfunctioning liver. You are right though it is predominately used in diagnosing gallbladder disease or function.

Hope that helps.

Wendy
