Hi all. Hope you’re all keeping well. So had my results yesterday finally. Alcohol related fatty liver. Blood results for liver stiffness have come back ‘slightly elevated’. Consultants said I’ve got to have a ‘special’ ( his words) scan next month to see how stiff it is! Can anyone shed any light on this for me? Liver function tests came back normal, test for chronic liver disease came back negative
Many thanks.

Please see Laura’s and the lass’s comments below. Only trying to help! I wish I had had advice like that when I first got diagnosed and hadn’t left it until the Consultant said “give up or else”. I didn’t like the “or else” bit. But I was way too late and then followed three years of misery 👎🏻. Actually it’s now 4 years due to some issuettes post TP.
Try try really hard Charlie, you CAN and really should do it. You won’t regret it that’s for sure! And think of all that extra spending money 😁 and nights you can actually remember 😁😁. You can’t lose really.
Charlie I do hope your listening to Angus as he's been in your situation and this message is coming from another man who doesn't want to see you suffer like he and others have/are
I’m guessing the “special” test is a fibroscan to measure the average stiffness and, as I found out recently, also estimates fat content. I had this done privately as I was curious how my previously fatty liver (seen in an ultrasound check) was doing after I’d quit alcohol at the end of last year. I was pleasantly surprised the fat had pretty much gone. The stiffness was normal, but as I’d never had the test before, I had no comparison.
You said the blood tests measured liver fat and stiffness. I’m not sure that’s the case. What did the results look like?
You might find this link useful. Its the British Liver Trust website where you can find information for anyone concerned with liver health and disease.
Firstly try not to stress if it was only a few days since you received your results. Secondly like most on here I would advise you give up the alcohol as this is the first step to getting your liver back on track.
I agree with others that it sounds like your consultant has requested a fibroscan which I too had a few months ago at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. To put your mind at ease it was all over in a few minutes so there's nothing to be scared of.
I read up on fibroscans from the web first so I knew what to expect and what questions I could ask.
I was given my KPA and CAP reading there and then which helped me understand what condition my liver was in, this information helped me understand a little more until I received my full results from my consultant.
This is only a suggestion but I would also get yourself on an healthy eating plan and increase your daily exercise pattern as this too will help towards improving your overall health/liver as its helped me losing over 3 stone.
Please remember we're all on this forum to help and advise one and other based on our own experiences. We do occasionally have a little banter with one another mainly to cheer one and other up as life's to serious which can help some when stressed or concerned.
All I'm now going to say bye for now Charlie and take care and here's a smile from me 😊
Your 1st post 3 months ago said you have or may have alcoholic fatty liver disease. I strongly advise you to give up the booze for good if you want to help your liver recover. If you struggle on your own, please see your GP and arrange councelling. Please nip this in the bud before you become seriously ill.
Best of luck

Hope your taking on board further replies from others on this forum as its imperative you STOP drinking alcohol if you want to recover and not suffer with horrendous PAIN for long term or possibly life like some have to persevere on this forum who are giving you there advice NOT to go down the same road they did!
Please Charlie listen to me and to others as we're only trying to protect you!
Like Laura states please seek help if you need it as some wont admit they require it until it's to late!
Note: I'm still here as a kind friend !

Tell your doctor to stop talking to you as if you were a child (a special scan) ask him what it is. You will probably be amazed at how little he knows. GPs shy away from learning about cirrhosis because it's so complicated. Your liver specialist is the best one to talk to. I've not seen my GP for two years about my cirrhosis, it's a waste of time. By the way I'm not putting the GPs down, they a good people. But they are just general practicioners.
I can now second that. I previously imagined liver fat (alcohol-related) would take a year or two to clear up after stopping drinking. It obviously depends on the amount of fat to start with and bear in mind the healthiest liver will have some fat, but my mild fatty liver cleared up within a few* months.
* I say a few as my tests, first an ultrasound and then a fibroscan, were eight months apart.
So six months is a good estimate.
Charlie1969, what’s your long-term plan, give up altogether?
Hi Charlie. I'm a woman too, just popping in to say that unfortunately explains the situation with the liver specialist, mine talks so much to my husband rather than me I finally lost it and told her(!), hey I am the patient lol. When I asked about fat in my liver, she put me in another room and I had a fibroscan straight away! 😉👍 I already have cirrhosis, at the rate I'm going my liver will be like new when I'm 120 years old lol. Good luck with making healthier choices! Cut out sugar and processed food right away and you'll be doing your liver a massive favor. Increase healthy fats, found in avocado, olives, nuts and seeds. X
Sorry Charlie just having a we joke between ourselves ! X
Charlie - liver function tests don't necessarily correlate with hardening of the liver. whatever stage it may be. Therefore it is possible to have begun to have irreversible damage and it can only be confirmed with a 'Special test" You didn't ask for advice, so forgive me offering some. Don't waste time being surprised that doctors can be irritating, we all can be! Just take super care of yourself. I believe you know what that involves. I also believe from all your posts that you may be in denial of the reality of your situation. Be brave. You can do what you have to do to get on the easier path out of this problem. Best wishes
