Hi Annette, the Wikipedia page on it is quite simple, to understand. To calculate Child Pugh Score medics look at Serum Albumin, Total Bilirubin, INR, presences of ascites, presence of Hepatic Encephalopathy. Each is then given a score which are then added up to give the A,B,C scoring.

Child Pugh A is the least severe with a score of 5-6 points it would indicate a 100% one year survival and a 85% two year survival.

Wikipedia page is at :- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Child... .

In Britain the UKELD scale is the most commonly used scoring system and it is the points system which indicates need for transplant listing.

Child Pugh A is good news in the grand scheme of things, hope this info. helps.

All the best, Katie :) xx

Hi Katie

Thanks yet again for your help, I got that score today from gastroenterolgist, I sometimes hesitate to use Internet, silly me, still am going to see my heptologist in June, gastroenterolgist says varices are obliterated so now 1 yearly endoscopy, but still scan every 6 months, hope your hubby and yourself are well as can be. All the best to you both. Annette

Hi angse..i think they go by blood work rather than accites and portal hypertension...i think an increase in certain liver tests does indicate a worsening of the liver damage overall .. i think maybe its 3 or more of the important blood tests that would come up together as giving the overall score.

Thanks for your advice ballie52

I just wondered gastroenterolgist did not tell me, I had apptiontment with him yesterday, and he was speaking in to his Dictaphone to my heptologist at kings college as I will be seeing him in June, just wondered what it meant. Thank You. Annette

Child-Pugh A is the most healthy of the 3 scores, its means well compensated cirrhosis and has an expectancy of 15-20 years. A more modern scoring system is the MELD score though.

It wouldnt be so bad if the two common ones were in the same place and you put the blood test results in to get a score for both pugh and meld at the same time. WHAT DO YA RECKON RALPH..a new website with a basic flowchart program for blood tests results. It seems obvious but GP,S dont have acesss to one and theres info scattered all over different sites with no central point of origin or exit to find once score is calculated...the result gets weaker the more opinions you get from the experts which is the last thing us guys want when faced with such a life challenge. Its bad enough being separated into different levels of social acceptability bsed on if its alcohol induced (your own fault) or another type of illness that wasnt your fault and treated better by the nurses if you fit into their own personal idea of whats worthy of a decent bed manner.

Do i sound bitter? Haha.
