Cramps are often a sign of Magnesium deficiency. You can get safe supplements from the health food shop or Homeopathic Pharmacy

jillian65,

I have de-compensated cirrhosis and also suffer quite often from cramps of the fingers usually not long after eating food. As I take diuretics including the potassium sparing Spironolactone I have always assumed the cramps to be a consequence of electrolyte imbalance (sodium, potassium and magnesium etc). For obvious reasons I can not take any potassium supplement but I have discovered that when the cramps do occur if I take a low dose magnesium tablet they disappear within about 25 to 45 minutes thereafter. As I understand it people that suffer cirrhosis are often deficient in both magnesium and zinc but its always best to discuss things with your doctor before taking any form of supplement as they are not right for everyone.

I hope that your husband will soon find something that works for him

Regards

Thank you very much you comments have been very helpful. He sees the specialist next week, we'll ask her then.

I suffered with hand cramps for a few years..embarrassing when eating out. They moved to my legs too so not as much driving.. He should ask his consultant as supplements are usually not allowed. Everyone is different but get medical advice first better than doing more damage.

I have cirrhosis and was getting very stiff painful fingers especially in the morning. I got from a health shop calcium with magnesium with zinc , took 2/3 of the stated dose. Hands never troubled me again, also helped with legs. My consultant said it was fine, and great that I found something right for me. You do not absorb minerals in the same way, and sometimes a boost will help. Only took it for two weeks as all fine, if it comes back will take them again.

Thank you it's comforting to know there is a solution.

Worth a try , I like craft and woodwork so it was really impairing me. We are all different , some people would advise potassium. Must not touch that with the kidney impairment though.

Its interesting regarding the hands and cramp; does anyone have symptoms of shooting pains in arms or legs/ feet, numbness; very painful hands and sometimes cannot clench the fist. But not exactly like cramp? on a daily basis? Worse from evening onwards?

I have pain in my hands and having difficulty clenching also. It's worst in the morning for me. I also get numbness in my legs and toes. These are daily.
