Hi everyone, I have yet another pair of running shoes with a hole in the upper where my big toe rubs against the inside of the shoe as I run.
is there a solution as shoes are increasing designed to be light weight, so the uppers become thinner to keep the weight down subsequently I wear the uppers out, such that my right foot gets wet when running in the rain and rather dusty when the weather is dry! At the moment that appears to be a rare condition found in our UK at the moment.
There is plenty of sole left on the shoes so it’s a pity to have to reassign them to gardening shoes as I already have plenty of them!
If you could suggest possible solutions I would greatly appreciate them.
Many thanks
Steve

The only running shoes with which I've ever encountered that problem were Altras, bought very cheaply second-hand to test and rapidly dismissed as running shoes. I contrived to go through the upper despite only wearing them around the house. They were wide enough but clearly too low for my feet..
Tbh if my toe was rubbing against my running shoes as I run I'd be sizing up and/or buying shoes with a bigger toe box. Otherwise patch them, à la CBDB !
No idea, I've only had that one pair. Not exactly a selling point though if all their shoes wear through like that! Seems particularly odd as my second toe is longer than my big toe so I have to factor that into sizing.
Hi Everyone, thankyou so much for your comments and suggestions. Apparently wearing a hole in the shoe uppers isn’t an uncommon occurrence. With shoe uppers being made of lighter materials they will become even more fragile. I sort CBDB’s solution and have gone with patches and I’ll see if that is the solution rather than designate them as landfill!
FYI I have two makes of shoe and both suffer with an upper perforation.
The Brooks is shown above the other is a Mizumo waveinspire 18 , both in a wide fitting
I have always had that problem my big toe is sticky uppy ! Even when shoes are a whole size bigger it’s just my toe shape . CBDB has a great solution which I have made note of, I also think it’s the fabric most runners are made with. Happens with my socks too!!
My husband had this problem with all his sports shoes and his socks.....until he had his toe nails cut by a podiatrist. Result; nicer toe nails and shoe-and-sock-holes completely eliminated. Possibly worth a couple of visits to get your nail care back on track.
This used to happen to me. Apart from when my toe actually got stuck in the hole, it's not really a problem (I am not really aiming for dry feet) But I've realised my last few pairs it hasn't happened. No idea why!
Same here so after just reading CDBD’s recommendation in his reply to you, I have just placed my order! I have neat toenails, my shoes are a size up and it only happens on my right foot so I’m putting it down to my running/walking style. Be great if the patches work as I am loath to give up on my shoes before their true time is up. Thanks for raising the question
When I got my running shoes, they told me that I needed a thumb's width between the end of my toe and the end of the shoe but this seems more height of shoe over length of shoe?
Hi everyone and thank you for replying so positively to my request for solutions to my big toe issue. It’s amazing to find out it just isn’t me particularly as I am not alone wearing through my right hand shoe uppers as I run.
Thought I’d give you an update on my progress. I did purchase the sticky pad kit, but prior to using it I thought I’d give the needle and thread solution a go.
It was then imo then hilarity occurred. No threads in the house so purchased thread. Next find a needle - not as easy as you might think. Next threading the needle….it was easy when I was a Boy Scout but so much more challenging now. Gave up and remembered I had a gizmo for threading the needle. By this time there wasn’t enough light .
Roll on the following day I now have two pairs of shoes badly stitched, one pair I am about to head out on my daily jog. Whether they will hold up to the rigours only time will tell!
Anyone telling me a needle and thread is the solution I am now very skeptical and my use of plasters on my fingers and thumbs has increased dramatically!
As I say I’ll report back how my hand stitching) worked or I need to use the sticky pad solution.
Trainer Armour is my go to solution for this very problem. Saved many a pair of running shoes well beyond retirement from running when they then took on a new role.
