You thought you knew how to tie a knot on your running shoes?

Just thought I’d share this video demonstrating the difference between a square knot and a granny knot!

I used to do always and unknowingly do a granny knot, having to double knot it on my runs as my laces would otherwise loosen.

However the solution is a square knot, looking almost the same, but making a huge difference. Having run with a square knot first time this morning, I can attest that they stay tight without the need of a double knot. And that means it’s so much easier to undo your laces after a run.

So if you don’t know the difference between a granny and a square knot but still think you know how to tie your shoes, watch this and let me know! What knot do you do when you lace up your running shoes?

I always just automatically tie a double bow, as I have since I was a small child and was taught to dress myself.

Looking at the video, as the bow is side-to-side across the shoe, it seems that's a square knot?!

I have heard about the "runner's knot" many times, and your post has finally caused to me go and look it up. 😀 Good for marathons apparently; I don't do very long runs so will probably will remain a "square", at least for now!

Well, the square knot is the better one, keeps tighter than the grannies knot. So I wouldn’t change! 👍🏽👏👟

I've never heard it called a square knot before - it's been a reef knot to me since I was in Brownies about a million years ago!

Yeah, my hubby said that as well. But I guess I missed out on scouts completely 🤣

We were also told that the reef knot doesn’t slip. Don’t trust your life on it with synthetic rope! 🧗🏻‍♀️

Synthetic rope is a pain, much too wiggly and slippy!

I think I’m happy trusting my running shoes with this, and my climbing days are over.. 🤣🤣

Revolutionary! I knew there was a best way to do it but didnt know how.

Yeah, this is probably well known to many but kind of blew my mind how simple the solution was to never have my laces become untied again, whilst not having to constantly struggle untying double knots!

now I just need a rainy day where I have nothing else but to play with my shoe laces ;-)

Ooo I do struggle with forming knots from pictures! I'm expert at a reef knot but can I transform that into a bow no!! I'm trying!

It’s strange isn’t it? Knotting your shoes is such an embodied, learned action, and one passed down by your parents, that it really is difficult to unlearn and relearn!

No idea what I tie, but whichever it is I double it 🤣. Interesting enough to have a play with my shoes, but for my runners “much less often” is still sometimes so double wins!
