and I’m back on the IC again!!!

so I thought I’d bruised my toes badly, by dropping a full water bottle on them from the roof of the car, where I’d put it while putting my jacket on. Turns out I’ve fractured my little toe in 2 places!!!

I’d been walking round trying to keep it mobile, even ran on Sunday -2 days after injuring it, and it didn’t seem too bad. Then on Tuesday I had to return the Heart Monitor I had been wearing for the last week and I decided I would walk up to the hospital. Normally I do this with no bother and I walked halfway on the level then turned and started to walk up the hill to the hospital. Of course this started to put more pressure on the toe and about halfway up the hill I was really struggling and in considerable pain.

By the time I got to the receptionist and handed in the monitor I was really limping and next door to tears. The receptionist asked me what I’d done and when I told her she suggested I pop across to the Fracture Clinic and ask their advice. I did and they told me to go down to A&Eand see if they’d X-ray it, which they did, after a 3 hour wait, and told me I’d fractured it and no running for 4-6 weeks. Luckily it wasn’t any of the larger bones in the foot or I’d have had to be plastered.

So annoyed as I’d been doing so well again and it’s the best running season now. And I’m not even supposed to walk on it too much so can’t even go for nice long walks 😭😭😭

Cripes limberlou, I read your post about how you hurt your foot and thought it was just badly bruised... and you ran on it too! Walking uphill seems to have been the last straw, sounds so painful. At least you know exactly the extent of the fracture, six weeks seems like ages, but it will need that time to heal.

A little time gardening and relaxing with your foot up, being patient is needed.

You were being so good trying to keep your fluids up too!

Big hug, and take care of that foot.

😚xxx

Yeah I thought it was just bruised too but obviously not and I’ve made it worse. But I’m back to the Arnica gel and rest. I’m also committing myself to a gentle Pilates class daily and doing some Strength and Flexibility stuff too, toe permitting. having read up on it apart from not running they say don’t do squats either and I was doing them with a kettle bell on Monday night too!!! 🤦‍♀️ Ignorance is bliss they say !!

Oh my goodness. That is horrid. I do empathise. hugely, having broken, fractured, both my little toes more than once!

You must have been on agony, for such a small thing, the pain can be really bad. It must be a nasty fracture

All you can do is, wait it out and be really kind to the foot and yourself.. The only advice I was given, ( I rang the NHS helpline , the first time I did it... ), was, rest it and then when any swelling went, buddy it up to the next toe...( that really does make it feel comfier), and no running of course...

Clearly your injury is much worse and you are going to have to be patient. AsBluebirdrunner suggests, when the pain eases, a little gentle garden time and maybe some walks as an when.

The six weeks will go quicker than you think and there are loads of upper body and gentle leg exercises to keep you going. If you have access to a cross-trainer or elliptical ... that may be useful. I used mine just to keep the knees and legs strong.

Heal well, and do pop in to keep us posted please:) xxx

yeah unfortunately I was trying to “ walk it off” and it’s also in the same area as the injury I did back in 2019, when I ended up in a boot for 6 weeks , so it’s aggravated that too. It had never really gone away.

oh no! And you ran on it, you must be superwoman but no running for now until it’s fixed which must feel like pants.

It didn’t hurt when it was supported by my lovely running shoes, then I did loads of squats with a kettle bell on Monday nights Pilates and apparently that’s a no no too. 🥴. But it hurts now so Arnica gel and Ibuprofen it is then and lots of rest.

Jeepers! Poor you! Dashed dangerous items those water bottles!

Isn't it weird how often something incredibly trivial and insignificant can cause you bother?

limberlou profile image
limberlouGraduate10 in reply toGthants

Yup. That’s why I divorced my ex!! 😂😂

Still to quote Arnie “ I’ll be back”.

Poor you, huge sympathy!I was getting ready to go to a wedding and smashed my little toe on a bookshelf. No time to get to a&e, (no idea about first aid either) so just put my high heels on, gritted my teeth and went.

Pretty sure it was broken but when you're in your 20s and having fun you don't necessarily take things seriously 😁

Get well soon x

Yeah I’d have probably done the same then too. Bit different when you are in your 70s. Things take a bit longer to heal unfortunately. I could kick myself ( but then I’d probably break something else)😂

Bad luck! It's great that you've identified it relatively early so you can start the healing process and get out there again when you are better.

You'll make it back, never fear!

Thanks, well at least I know what to do now and at least I’m not in a boot this time. In 10 days it will be 5 years since I trashed that foot last time. And at least I’m not in a boot for 6 weeks this time round.

Thanks I’ll try not to whinge too much as it was my own silly fault really but it is disheartening when things have been going well lately 😭

Yeah I started off chilling in the garden … then I ended up pruning two big Camellias with my hedge trimmer and filling 6 compost bags of leaves. I find it so hard to just chill
