I’d like some advice on running jackets please. I hate running in the rain and always avoid it but with the weather we’ve been having I might never run again so it’s time to buy a running jacket.
My problem is at they vary massively and I don’t want to spend a fortune. What should I look out for? I don’t want to feel like I’m in a sweat bubble (like I do in my current one)
All recommendations appreciated

Good question. That depends on the outside temperature. Now it's wet but it's not freezing. Some like to wear lightweight waterproof jackets but you are likely to get really (really) sweaty underneath, even more so when the temperature is higher up. Solution? Start with a light jacket, get warm, take the jacket off and continue to get drenched, you're wet anyway. Running in the rain can feel fun and liberating if you're warm.
On the other side, in the winter I wear a wind/waterproof jacket with just a single base layer underneath in order to prevent overheating, but if there is heavy rain falling, bordering on sleet, I choose to wait until it’s gone. If you get soaked in low temperatures and are not close to a warm shelter, things could get cold and very nasty so it’s better to stay on the safe side.
I spent more than I intended to on a lightweight jacket by Ronhill. Never regretted it. I don't really like running in the rain either. So mine is not totally waterproof but it's fine for the sort of drizzle that I venture out in. Once I'm warmed up, I don't mind if the rain gets harder and I get wet. I also wear a baseball type cap under the hood to keep my glasses clear! The bonus about this type of jacket is that it's great on a cold windy day, until I'm warmed up, then it gets tied round my waist.
I've got a Ron Hill lightweight jacket too, I got it in the sales and it was pretty reasonable. I was so impressed I gave one to my husband for Christmas, he loves it too. It's really comfy and has a pocket big enough for my phone 😁
I have two running jackets. One for wet and cold, the other for warmer days. My cold jacket is an OMM Kamleika which is pretty well waterproof. It was a bit expensive, but up here in the North East the temperatures can get very low in winter, add in wind chill, rain, and snow…..my 72 year old frame needs a bit of protection. I go out in all weathers though. I have had it for 6 years.
For summer I have a rarely used thin shower proof jacket for days when it is warm but pouring with rain. If it really warm…I often just get wet.
I love my higher state breathable jackets from sportsshoes website. They weren't too expensive and there are often sales there. They're really comfortable - lightweight and I don't get too sweaty. If I take it off it ties round my waist fine. I have a high Vis that was a bit too fitted so I got a different colour slightly bigger and prefer that size. I don't mind getting wet when out running but setting off in rain needs extra comfort I feel 😊
I've just looked at their site, and seen a jacket I really want. How do you find their sizes? I am normally 12-14 UK, med or sometimes large in sports gear, but according to their size guide I am XXL...any advice please?
I avoid a waterproof jacket because I get far too hot and it is not breathable. Instead I have a windproof jacket which keeps the worst of the rain off but I realise I get wet. I got something really cheap - I think from startfitness.
If you listen to the NRC Rainy Run Coach B recommends a water resistant jacket, not waterproof, as its breathable. So I bought a cheap one from Dare2b which does great. It's lightweight and windproof too. Then my son bought me a goretex one for my birthday which is also brilliant for winter.
If the weather is mild and you're properly warmed up you can get away without a jacket for light showers. Honestly, you really don't feel the rain in those conditions.
Do you have a hat? A peaked cap can help keep the rain (and sun) out of your face.
If you must have a jacket, don't get something that's totally waterproof. Anything that keeps the wet out will usually also keep the wet in. You will become a boil in the bag runner after a few minutes.
