I haven’t run properly since staggering round the 10 miles of Great South Run in October. A podiatrist suggested I have a plantar plate tear in my foot and I’m still waiting on a firm NHS diagnosis so have been a bit hesitant to do too much on it. But a couple of months of no running and not as much walking as I would like, have left me feeling sluggish so I’ve decided that it’s time to do something about it - and that means restarting C25K (again)! First run was on Tuesday, crumbs it was hard work! Today was W1R2, and my legs were telling me that I need to drink more water! Plus I took my watch but forgot to set it to ‘run’ , which doesn’t really matter but I like to have the record! In view of the frost I left it until quite late in the morning to go out which is unusual for me but an earlier start on Tuesday left my fingers so cold they hurt, even with gloves on. Anyway, run 2 done on a glorious morning and here’s to the rest of the plan!

Congratulations on getting out there and running again! I hope your foot behaves itself and doesn't spoil your fun.

It's so cold running out there we don't need ice baths for therapy, do we? 🥶❄❄❄

Thanks YLG! You’re right about the cold - I’m not really a ‘cold’ person and if it gets any colder I’m going into hibernation; just wake me up in the spring!

Ooo a huge welcome back from me 😁 so pleased to see you running again

Well, maybe a slow shuffle Sue! And we’ll have to see how the foot holds up!

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply toOldgirlruns

Yes, but it must feel good to get out again, a slow shuffle is the best type of running 😁 I shall keep my fingers crossed that the foot does hold up

Congratulations to you OGR on starting C25K again, as Oldfloss tells us all to take all the runs slow and steady, I just hope that planter plate tear doesn't stop you from doing the course again, I wish you good luck.

I am very well thanks Oldgirlruns, I had a good Christmas and New Year, I ran my first run of the year, it was a 10K on the 10th day of Christmas, 3rd January. ✔️

Well done OGR. Hope you manage to get a firm diagnosis soon, so you can start on a recovery regime. Take it easy, but I’m sure you’ll feel better for being more active xx

Well done Oldgirlruns , yes this cold snap has made quite a difference after mild December. We were running in tandem on the Billy Trail and the puddles had iced over. Will you run R3 at parkrun ?

Oldgirlruns profile image
OldgirlrunsGraduate10 in reply toDexy5

Billy Trail must have been lovely today. Yes, R3 at PR!

Fantastic news OGR! It’s the best way to get back isn’t it, and I know you’ll sail through. 👊 Who have you picked as your coach this time?

As you know I’m sure, I’m redoing C25K too, just because. I need easy wins, as I could feel myself falling out of love with running for some unknown reason. I did W2R2 today and will do R3 at PR. It’s working! 👏👏

Go us! 💪

Oldgirlruns profile image
OldgirlrunsGraduate10 in reply tocheekychipmunks

Definately go us cheeky! Denise is keeping an eye on me this time round, how about you? It feels a bit strange to be doing it but it’s nice to have a focus again.

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksGraduate10 in reply toOldgirlruns

Oh snap! I chose Denise this time in the absence of my beloved MJ. She’s great, and I’m getting the sense of achievement I’ve been missing recently. Maybe almost burnout (in my case). Shame I wasn’t on Strava back then, as it would be fun to compare runs. Are you able to?

Oldgirlruns profile image
OldgirlrunsGraduate10 in reply tocheekychipmunks

Strange isn’t it, the script is the same but the effect is different with each ‘trainer’ - but I like the idea of being trained by a professional runner! No, I don’t think I used Strava on previous C25K iterations - and I’m not sure I really want to see how much slower I am now than I was then anyway!

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksGraduate10 in reply toOldgirlruns

Me too. Much as I like Sarah Millican, I wouldn’t take notice of what she was saying. How ridiculous is that? 😅

Well done Oldgirlruns - I too, have been revisiting C25K as I return from injury. The lovely Laura has guided me through some of the old runs and I am really enjoying it! It certainly feels easier than the first time - which a I think is a good sign!!🙂

Oldgirlruns profile image
OldgirlrunsGraduate10 in reply toSandraj39

Thanks Sandra, I think I’ll enjoy the discipline of C25K again and it’s surprising how short 60 seconds is this time round compared with the first time I did it! I hope your own recovery from injury continues to go well!

Goodluck with your running. 😀It must feel great to have made a start again. Well done! How is your heel feeling? Wishing you a speedy recovery and hope your appointment comes through soon.

I stopped running 6 months ago with plantar fasciitis. Just got orthotics from a podiatrist to support high arches. I too am waiting for an NHS appointment. I still have pain in the heel and am looking forward to starting the 5k plan again. I’ve been hesitant to start.

Oldgirlruns profile image
OldgirlrunsGraduate10 in reply toOrangemini11

Thanks O11, all good so far thanks; I’m sorry to hear about your PF, I know how painful it can be so I hope your appointment comes through soon.

Comte profile image

If there really is a tear in the foot muscle or tendons then you should not be running at all as you could make it worse without the supervision of a medical professional. If it is taking so long to get an NHS diagnosis why not get an ultrasound of the foot in private practice? Alternatively you could consult a physiotherapist but I am fairly sure the physio would say that the first thing to do is an ultrasound or even an X ray of the foot.

Oldgirlruns profile image
OldgirlrunsGraduate10 in reply toComte

Thanks Comte, you’re quite right and I’m being very careful what I do. To be fair, anyone who knows how slow I run will tell you it’s more of a walk anyway so hopefully it’ll be ok. I’ve had an X-ray to start the process and I’m looking at the private path so we’ll see how we get on!

congrats on getting out there, especially at this time of year!! I’ve not run since July last year😱 Hopefully I’ll restart in Feb.. Happy running😁

Well done on getting out there OGR. I don’t have to imagine the frustration, I was in a similar position at the start of 2022. It is unlikely that you have the same problem, but the first thing I did was to get an X-ray done through the GP (a couple of days wait) just to rule out any bone damage ( my ankle kept swelling and the soles of my feet were really painful when walking…I couldn’t run). My faithful sports physio got to the bottom of it pdq…a tendon which passes under the ankle bone on the inside of the foot needed massage and my normally high arch had collapsed a bit. A few exercises, some sticky tape to counter the arch collapse, and daily massages of the tendon(by me) and I was back running again in no time. So these things can turn around quite quickly given the correct diagnosis, and small things can cause a lot of pain. I hope you get to the bottom of this soon….oh, and the other mantra of my physio…older people ( me that is) are like horses; you have to get them back on their feet pdq! Again, well done for getting out there 👏👏👏👏

Oldgirlruns profile image
OldgirlrunsGraduate10 in reply toBeachcomber66

Thanks BC! Feet can be a real pain can’t they, I had a PF a couple of years ago and it was agony at times! I’m glad you’re back out there again now - as you say, we older horses need to be kept moving!

glad to hear you’re getting out there again. I hurt myself after finally reaching 10k runs and I don’t even think it was the running that did it. I’ve ended up going back to C25K again too and am just about to finish week 9. I am trying hard to be sensible, I know I’m slower than last year but really don’t want to overdo it. Ran on a totally flooded path at the start of last week and now watching out for ice.

Oldgirlruns profile image
OldgirlrunsGraduate10 in reply toFloradora2

I’m sorry to hear that getting to 10k left you with an injury Floradora and I know how you feel about the cause of it - I’m not sure running caused my problem either. Well done on getting back to week 9 again and on being sensible, frustrating though that may be! Be careful on that ice - if it gets like that where I am, I’ll be going into hibernation until April!

Sorry to hear about your injuries OG. I do hope the slow and steady restart will get you back to where you want to be. I’m redoing C25K too, after being out for a long while with knee problems, and am really enjoying the journey x
