Interrupted Run 1 of NRC 10k plan!!! (Or “BOOO” to ankle socks!)

Well!!! I learned something new! Ankle socks are bad for my shoes, and thus, both rub against my Achilles heel!

I managed to get through my 7-min warmup walk, when I stopped to redo my shoes and socks, as I could feel something rubbing!

I had put on my new pair of double-skinned running socks, one of a set of three given as presents also to my running husband and son!

Redoing my laces and socks, which had slipped into the shoe, and I could see I had already rubbed my skin into a reddish, wound-looking spot! I thought I could fix this with adjusting the shoe laces and I ran another few minutes, when I realised it now really hurt, and looking down, I could see my brilliant new socks had slipped again below the heel again, and my fabulous wide-toe box road shoes (which have never given me any trouble), where now definitely rubbing against my Achilles tendon.

Rather than continuing on, I thought it better to turn around, and I jogged all the way back home, and jogging on the balls of my feet also helped to keep the pressure off my Achilles area.

It was good that I did, as once home it had broken skin and I fixed it up with a plaster. Considering the mini run as a warmup, and feeling I needed to do a bit more than this mini-run, I then jumped barefoot on my indoor rowing machine, and after that did my yoga.

So all’s well that ends well.

But I have to now wait until skin has healed before heading out there again for my full NRC #1 run! NRC gave me a tick anyway, but I only got through 1/3 of the run, so will do this one again!

So this was my interrupted first run of NRC’s 10k plan. And “Booo” to ankle socks!

Happy running!

Oh no! Maybe it was the particular brand of ankle socks you’ve used and you’ve been unlucky. Kit fail is not a fun thing to happen on a run. Hope it’s a better one next time!

Yeah, I don’t think it’s the brand. They’re Hilly Twin Skin Anklets, and I had a longer pair by the same brand before and loved it. But I think it’s a combination of … a) these turning out to be lower/shorter than I expected (and shorter than the picture indicated) . Although they are called anklets, I expected them to be higher and b) my road shoes do have a bit of a higher heel neck area, and they might be half a size to big. But using twin socks (also hillies or two socks), this has never been an issue.

But with the lower sock, it gets dragged into the shoe and then the heel rubs. Sigh.

Solution: longer socks. But I’ll try another heel lock lacing technique as well. Or when running with these socks, use other running shoes.

Thank you. I’ll try and find a good solution, as i love the socks.

Ouch!! I got a horrible blister from some badly made socks, the size of a 10p coin. Blister plasters are amazingly soothing and speed up the healing process.I've been using Balega socks since then, no further problems.

Get well soon 😁

Balega! I will look these up!

I've got 2 pairs, the short trainer style socks that leave the ankles exposed and the longer ones. I've had the first pair for over 2 years, still going strong. The only reason I got the second pair was because I lost the first pair. They are black and I'd put them on a black surface. Maybe should have got new specs instead but the new ones are bright orangey pink so much harder to lose :)

Oh bad luck! I hate when something I have high hopes for lets me down.Have you tried Hilly's socks?monoskin and marathon socks are good. Also got some from CEP. I've never had low socks that didn't slip until these.

In fact I love the marathon socks so much I wear them any old time I'm wearing trainers!

They were hillies. I do love my hillie socks, just think the height was a bit low and in combination with my road shoes, it’s an issue.

Ah that's a blow! 😬

Oh dear, slipping socks are bad, have you got blister plasters?

CBDB profile image
CBDBGraduate10 in reply toSueAppleRun

Got them. 👍🏽 Surprising, as I seldom get blisters,

Longer socks... save the anklet socks for wearing with other lower back shoes, maybe... I have worn More Miles since the first runs... and have my double skin winter Under Armour... for really chilly days.

More Miles and U der Armour. Got it. It’ll have to wait for next Xmas, but I’m keeping a running list of desirable running kit. 😃

That sounds really painful and annoying. Sometimes these little injuries look like almost nothing but can be so sore. Hope it heels quickly.Another vote foe Balega here, although recently I got some great and cheap ones from Decathlon

👍🏽 Yes, it’s already scabbed over. At least I can row and do yoga, but I will wait until it’s healed before running again, just to make sure I don’t aggravate it.

What a nuisance! Not something you expected to cause problems. I don’t think I’ve ever had problems with socks. I’ve used trainer socks and ankle socks. My favourites are ankle socks from Aldi. Although inexpensive - they are marketed as runners’ socks. Bought a really nice top from them, too.

Hope you heal quickly and manage to get out there again soon.

Oh what a pain. It's so annoying when my which you have been looking forward to using let's you down! What a good thing that the other things you do like the rowing and the yoga don't have to be put on hold too! Hope you heal quickly!

I’m in the annoying “ it’s healing and itchy, but don’t scratch!” phase. 🤣🤣🤣
