First steps back after nearly 4 months of being off with hip bursitis :(

It hasn't really been a good year running wise; covid and some other minor ailments then a sprained ankle. Just when I was thinking I could start and build up my running again I got hip bursitis at the end of July. Apart from a few short test runs I have not run as in 'normal running' since late July. This must be the longest break from running I have had for about 15 years and I have been quite fed up and despondent about it. At 66 there is always that nagging thought that this is the end of my running, which doesn't help morale. So, finally this past week I have successfully managed a couple of laps of the local park on two occasions which is about 2.5k, so I think I have turned a corner and am back running at last, even if it is only short distances.

One of the reasons for this post is to pass on something I learnt to anybody else who suffering from hip bursitis (also called Trochanteric Bursitis). There are countless videos online that advise stretching to help this condition, but just one or two that say the opposite; don't stretch but do, do exercises for strengthening. I think if I had found this advise about not stretching earlier I would have been back running a whole quicker. Sorry to ramble on, but I hope this perhaps helps somebody else who might also have hip bursitis.

You are on a very similar return to running trajectory to my own and, at 68, I too have harboured negative thoughts of 'is this it?' since being hors de combat from the start of July. The good news for both of us is that, whilst it can be a slow, frustrating process (and I'm a long way off of my goal still), a return to running is possible. I've found the support and motivation of my local Parkrun (my first run back took me 46 minutes!) invaluable in this and I also find that posting to Strava helps because of the guilt trip engendered by not posting, but maybe that is just me.

Good luck with your return and always remember that results are not the important stat and that we are but a small % of our demographic pulling on running shoes still so we're already winners!

Totally agree, most of my family and friends of a similar age to me think I'm a bit crazy for still keeping running 😂😂😂
