I have been trying to avoid posting this but sadly i am on the IC couch again this time with a hip pain, suddenly happened 1.6 KM into a run a few weeks ago, tried to run theough the discomfort with painkillers and managed 3 x 3km runs........but there is no getting away from it, if i carry on it will get worse, doesnt hurt when when i walk slowly or stand but only when i walk at speed or run........fed up and frustrated. Been resting it for almost 2 weeks now with more glute and hip exercises, im itching to get out and run again ๐ฅบ
IC again ๐: I have been trying to avoid... - Bridge to 10K
IC again ๐
Oh what a nuisance, heal well
I feel for you XenaZelda . I've got the opposite problem - walking hurts my hip and knee but it's fine when I run. It's been going on since May and is a lot better than it was but I'm going to see the doctor next week to try and find out what's causing it.In the meantime all my holiday snaps reveal my sexy (er, no) knee supports below my shorts ๐
No fun at all, is it?
Thank you Yesletsgo, sorry your going through the same things almost, that's a long time to suffer, hope i don't suffer that long! i don't really want to go to the GP or physio, i like to sort it out myself with plenty of rest, strength and conditioning to include alot more hip and glute exercises to strengthen them. I would say on a scale of 1 -10 the pain is moderate ay around 5, but feels worse when i run for 3 KM, Ive ordered a lacrosse masage ball to exercise the trigger points in my glute as the pain goes down the back thigh as well as the hip bone and side of that leg, but no knee or lower leg pain. Fortunately its only 1 leg and i can walk about and still do housework and things (although would rather be out there running๐คฃ )
My main tactic has been to keep moving - lots of walking, plus wearing the dreaded supports pretty much full time. I was on my boat so no ice available so just had to try rest, compression, elevation and industrial quantities of paracetamol.
I read this article - theguardian.com/lifeandstyl... - and it mentions paying attention to how you walk, peeling your foot off the ground. I find if I do this at the start of my walk when it's painful it seems to force things into alignment and the pain subsides. Sometimes I have to exert pressure on my painful hip as I walk, no fun but seems to help.
I'm with you on trying to sort things out myself, especially when I'd have had no idea how to get a medical appointment while I was away. Having said which, the fact it's gone on for so long means I definitely need to get it checked out. When it's bad it's really bad, say an 8/10, but then it seems to go away completely. I think it's arthritis!
Oh that must be so painful, i feel for you, and like you if it goes on a long time without getting better will have to go see sports physio, i hope things get better for you, its so frustrating isnt it when all we want to do is keep fit
You have my sympathy XenaZelda - as I am also on the injury couch with what sounds like a similar problem. ๐ Physio appointment booked but not for another 2 weeks. Hereโs hoping we are both out there again soon!๐๐
Oh Sandra sorry your also going through this, never had hip pain before in my life and it came on suddenly during a run, i couldn't wait 2 weeks for physio (i know i would be advised to) but lots of videos say stop the activity that is aggravating it and do strength exercises on glutes and hips which i am doing and it has improved a bit and i've also ordered a lacrosse exercise ball to massage the trigger points in my glutes as the glute feels stiff and down the back thigh, be interesting to see what the physio advises you and please do let me know
Will do - mine came on during a run too. Hopefully I will be on the mend before I see my physio!๐คUnfortunately she is on hols at the moment but is a runner herself who has worked extensively with runners and was so helpful a few years ago when I had another injury. Like you, I have stopped running which seems to be the only thin hat aggravates it.
Good to see a physio that alao runs, she will help you im sure its just a shame you have to wait soblong to see her, be interesting tovsee what she diagnosis is your problem and what exercises she advises you do, see if its the same as i am doing, i used the massage ball tonight on the hip and glute and did feel a tightness which it relieved, will continue with it and the additional hip and flute exercises until no more stiffness and pain โค๏ธ
This injury couch is filling up fast - it must be 5k long now
It must be awful pain and best not to try run through it. If it continues try get to see a physio, they can do marvelous things tailored just for how your injury affects you. See a post I did a few weeks back if you have chance to look: healthunlocked.com/couchto5...
I wish you all the best in your recovery, it's all part of the big challenge we face as runners
All the best!
Thank you Frankenfoot, yes unfortunately runners get lots of injuries, can't avoid them even though we do lots of strength and conditioning, but with the right exercises to build strength in certain areas should lesson the injuries. The pain i have is only when i walk fast and run, not when i am sitting, standing or walking slowly, I don't really want to spend money on a physio at the moment, but if it continues, is not improving and stops me from running then i might have to, but i will try and sort it out myself first. I read your post in the link you provided and sorry your having providing with achilles heel (i think that is it lol) hope you are on your way to recovery ๐
Thanks so much for the kind words Yes, it's my achilles heel that became sore a week or two after completing C25k. Disappointing, but I'm glad I made it through the nine weeks - just had to delay a week with a cold. But as annoying as it is, I haven't stopped thinking about running and am just planning how best to get back to it. I've done lots of exercises like the NHS Flex and Strength ones and some pilates. Also light exercise bike work just to get my legs going. And of course the physio exercises I was given. She did the same thing yesterday, manipulated my calve till it was agony, then stuck a bunch of needles in it - to aid blood flow and recovery. I understand about cost, they are expensive. The first session was ยฃ50 then yesterday's was ยฃ46. And I've to go at least once more.
Sometimes you are better waiting and seeing, the human body does great at recovering on its own in the right circumstances. Lots of videos online and other help too, so I hope you can find something that works. I think NHS physio has quite a waiting list and the doctors try and put you off by telling you it could be a few months, but they might be a lot quicker than that too. In fact, I noticed in the waiting room at the private physio I went to that if a patient was working but having problems needing physio that affected work, or having to be off work, and a couple of other qualifying things too, then they offered four free sessions through some scheme. I don't know if it would be available in your area, but it might be worth trying to find out more about. I wish I could remember more about it for you. But hopefully you will be feeling much better with it for the resting. It makes all the difference
All the best!
I have the money to pay privately but want to try myself first as i may be able to sort it out, but thankyou for the info, i hope you get your pain sorted quickly as well, its so frustrating getting injuries isnt it
Ah sorry if you thought I was implying you didn't have the money, I just feel myself that it's a large expense and there's often more important things to spend it on. I went in desperation after trying ice and rest for a fortnight. Touch wood I might be able to run again very soon, it's feeling lots better this week.Sorry if I caused offense, I was trying to be helpful, but sometimes I overdo it
I hop you feel more up to running again soon. I've found it really frustrating with only recently graduating, and I think now, I am going to have to start again at the beginning... But it's all part of the challenge... At least, that's what I keep telling myself
All the best!
Oh please dont apologise i was not offended at all and you were being helpful which i appreciate, its just that my dogs chemotherapy is very expensive and my dogs come first, infact with a couple of weeks of rest and hip and glute exercises along with the ball massage of the glute it feels a bit better and it wont be long for both of us to be back to where we wereโค๏ธ
Oh phew, I was worrying I had upset you. I love that dogs come first, I'm the same. We have a saluki/ greyhound that we rehomed from rescue. He had 3 owners and 3 foster homes before he came to us and he was only one year old. Poor boy didn't know whether he was coming or going and took some time to settle. He's such a lovely lad now and has stolen our hearts. I'd jump in front of a truck to save him, so I know exactly how you feel. I hope your dog is recovering with the chemo and doing well with it.
Hope your exercises do the trick too. I think I could probably run now but want to give my heel another week just to make sure. I don't want to end up back on the couch again.
All the best. Let me know how your doggy is doing
Firstly so sorry you are in pain. Your post caught my eye only because during C25k I had similar. Obviously I canโt begin to diagnose your pain or the reason for it in any professional capacity, but I can only tell you how I navigated my own pain and frustration at that time. I posted similar to you about it happening firstly after each run around week 5 or 6 maybe. Then during one run like you it just happened during the run and I stubbornly carried on until Iโd finished! Hobbled around after. What I found worked for me was literally dialling it all back, doing some strength work and definitely doing some stretches before and after running- something I was neglecting! I also left more days between runs for a while, sometimes repeated runs, and basically took everything that little bit slower! It wasnโt a backwards step more sideways for a little while why my body gained enough strength to cope with the strains and stresses I was putting it through. I had never run before and hadnโt been that fit before starting the programme. I was asking too much of it and a little too eager! I just had to stop and listen to my body a bit more, accept that it needed a bit more time, and tried not to get too frustrated with myself because I know I didnโt want to give up the programme. I wanted that goal. I wanted all the benefits it brings.
So, again these things might not work for you, and maybe if the pain continues seek medical advice but otherwise, just try slowing it all down, keep going with the strength and stretches and stay in tune with what your body tells you inbetween runs, take that extra day or two more if it needs it. You will totally get there! And I really understand the frustration, especially just as you start to feel youโre getting a taste for it all!
Be kind to yourself! You got this! ๐ช๐ป
Well done on getting your issue sorted sometimes we can sortvthings out ourselves, when i started C25K back in October last year i developed a very bad knee and shin pain at run3 of week 5, i couldnt even walk on it and couldnt run for around 5 weeks, but lots of trigger point massage with hands and foam rolling and strength and core work it disappeared completly and havent had a problem with my knee or shin since, so im hoping i can sort the hip and thigh issue out myself as well, im not running at the moment and may give it another week of doing strength and massage and next week go for walks to test and if ok ill try a short run
Sorry to hear you're on the IC, XenaZelda ๐ Take the time you need to heal well so you get back into it stronger ๐ช and better!
Well will 2 weeks of hip and glute strengthening along with ball massage of the glute, i decided i would try an hour walk thia morning, pain was minimal but still there but i thought id try a short run of 1 mile (1.6 km), broke it up into half kilometres with a walk inbetween to test the pain level, well im pleased to say the pain did not increase and therecwas no pain at the hip or down the outside of leg, i honestly believe it was the 2 days of massaging that hip and glute up against a wall that has loosend the tightness, so i will continue with the hip and glute strengenthening along with my other strength and core work and rest for a xouple of daus before trying another 1 mile run, if successful then i can start to get back to where i was ๐
