Since completing my first 10k run well over a year ago, I have had a number of setbacks which resulted in my running 5k-8k three times a week; Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The setbacks included painful knees, hip pain as well as ankle pain. The rest days between runs helped a lot especially with the knees and hips.
Then last week, we went out with a friend to celebrate birthdays (hers 58th mine 68th 😱) and I managed to get food poisoning. I was sick and felt really dreadful for a couple of days and didn’t even contemplate going for a run that week. On Monday, I went for a walk and felt very weak afterwards. So no run on Monday but this morning, at 5:15, I set off gingerly and set myself a target of 4k with a promise to myself to stop if I felt bad. Anyway, the run went really well. Hydrated well before and after the run. Post-stretches, I am now enjoying my banana and Mokapot coffee and listening to Schubert’s 5th! So I am back to building up to 10km, gradually and only at the pace that feels comfortable to me (this morning 5’25” per km).
Point of this dross is that one can face setbacks and start over even if not from the beginning! Really missed running when I wasn’t able. Feeling much better now. 👍

Well done you.. so many of us , set backs and come backs... returns and repeats.... but those runs are so patient... they wait.... Keep it steady and slow to return to full strength x
Thank you for the comment and support. Yes, one has to recognise that, especially as one gets past 60, that there will be more and more issues that hold up the pleasure of running.
oh rotten ‘ell! Food poisoning is terrible 😫. You can feel rough for ages afterwards. Hopefully you’ll soon be good as new and back out there rippin it up 😀
Good luck
PS. Coffee, nana and Schubert sounds just wonderful 🙏😀
Thank you for the kind wishes. Yes, when I was poorly, I felt truly awful and doubted I’d walk again never mind jog! Especially when I was hugging the bowl calling out to God! 🤣
But by the end of day two, I began to feel human again and the recovery thereafter was swift. It’s hard to describe just how awful food poisoning can make you feel!
Congratulations! It sounds like you’ve been through the mill! Injuries and setbacks can be so demoralising but it’s great to feel like you’re on your way back again. Absolutely brilliant 4k. Something to really celebrate.
Food poisoning is grim. Just horrid. You’ve got a lot of sympathy from me! Really hope that doesn’t plague you again!!
Good luck for your journey back and finding a pattern of runs that allows you to stay injury free. Sometimes that’s a bit of trial and error! Love your celebration by the way. Posh coffee is my reward of choice too!
Thank you so much for replying and your comments. Music and coffee post-run is a fabulous way to start the day. I run at 05:30 and the day stretches waaay ahead. Better half thinks I’m bonkers but I don’t think she knows what she’s missing! Each to their own.
