First Speed Run

BlackCountryLee profile image

Did my first ever speed run this morning (the First Speed Run from the NRC 10k plan) and despite finding the prospect of doing it daunting I absolutely loved it. Walked briskly during the recovery phases and was happy with the pace when running. What it’s shown me is that mixing up your sessions keeps things fresh. The high from completing was on par with finishing my first run on C25K. Another one pencilled in for Friday, can’t wait!

They’re so much fun! The speed runs were such an unexpected joy when I did the HM programme. There are some really good ones to come. Hill sprints are my favourites, which I never, every thought I’d be saying!!!

So glad you enjoyed yourself!

Yeah I’ve seen the hill sessions. Hoping I love them as much as you do! 😁

Loved it! I was a bit unsure what to do during the recovery phases. Advice seems split between stopping altogether, walking and jogging. Went for the brisk walk in the end.

Yes, I tended to walk in the breaks , I didn't want to sieze up !

If/when you get on to the HM plan, there are some speed runs where they tell you run slowly during the recovery, so I assume you are meant to walk if they don't tell you otherwise. I love these sessions too, the time flies doesn't it? I'm always a bit nervous before I start, but I've always got through them.

Oh I was really nervous but in the end nothing to worry about. Like I said can't wait for the next one which will hopefully be Friday!

I love these plans because they tell you run the intervals at YOUR pace. I've done plans where they tell you how fast to run, and I can never achieve the required pace.

Unless it’s a hill, I drop to a walk or pace around on the spot! Jogging down the hill is usually gentle enough to get my breath back. I don’t think it really matters what you do as long as it works for you and you’re able to recover properly between the intervals.

I’m glad you felt like that with your run. I’m doing my first speed run later this morning and think brisk recovery walks sound a good idea. Exciting isn’t it!

I tried following a plan last year but found it too constricting and eventually gave up. Well done!
