Things are looking brighter!

It’s been almost two weeks since the ill-fated half marathon and things have been progressing well.

Essentially, the plan had been a programme of exercises to strengthen my hips and glutes, no running to allow the injury to settle down and a couple of sports massages to help with tightness around my hips. It’s not been all that enjoyable! The massages hurt. It’s been frustrating to be limited to walking, and limited walking at that. The exercises have been pretty boring to do every day. Still, I’ve been a good girl as I promised and I’ve stuck to the plan. Walks have built back up to an hour. There was one missed physio day when I had a gin and tonic forgetting that I hadn’t done my exercises and I didn’t think doing things standing on one leg was a good idea! The pain has improved to the point of almost being gone.

The great news is that the physio is happy for for to start some gentle runs again. I’ve had some guidance on how much pain is acceptable and for how long. If it’s too soon, I’ll stop rather than set myself back again. I’m more nervous than I thought I might have been! Tomorrow will be the day. Hopefully there’ll be a good report to come!

The best thing about this whole experience is I’ve really become aware of the weaknesses and lack of flexibility in my hips. It’s been brilliant working with a professional who knows exactly what they’re doing and I’ll be carrying on with the exercises (with some progression over time) longer term. I thought the thing that would make me a stronger and faster runner longer term was running more but it’s going to be prioritising strength work. That will mean actually dropping a run every week for a gym session but it’ll be good for me. I’m taking it a week at a time. This week has been better than last week and that’s all I can ask for at the moment!

The picture is from last night’s sunset walk. Despite all the difficulties, it feels like there’s a light at the end of the tunnel now!

Great news !And I'm impressed your being a good girl 😁

And yes, it is interesting to work with and talk to the professionals.

Amazing what they know and great to learn more from them also !

A good sports physio is worth their weight in gold 🙂

Hope tomorrow goes well for you xx

Thank you-it’ll have been a really positive experience once it’s over and I can look back on it!

I’ve been doing my walks in clothes I can’t run in to make sure I’m not tempted to push it too early!! I know my rebellious nature!

Really pleased to hear of your progress, well done! It certainly is not easy to ‘turn everything down’ a lot, like you have. But it seems to be paying off.

Thank you! It’s been a tricky time. I was expecting rest after the HM but not quite so much of a cut back! It’s nice to see the path to normality starting to emerge now. We’ll see how it goes tomorrow-maybe a bit of a step forward and back again. Overall positive is great though.

Thank you so much! Sensible has been hard but hopefully worth it. The sunsets have been particularly good over the past week or so. It’s cheered me up no end. We won’t mention today’s rain!

Really hope it’s a lovely jogette for you. Coach B is coming with me but I can send him round you you if you want him to keep you company! ❤️

Gorgeous photo! Take it slow and easy and recover properly, you know it's the right thing to do.

Thanks-it was such a beautiful sunset. Going out as it’s been getting dark has helped not be out for too long but the unexpected bonus has been some lovely views!

I’m definitely taking it steady. Most likely max fifteen minutes with Coach B tomorrow. I’m excited already!

That's a lovely photo and some positive news from your physio. It might not always be exactly what we want to hear, but to find one in whom we can invest our trust is a wonderful thing.Slowly but surely is the way to go. Best of luck for the next run

Thank you! We’re lucky to live somewhere that seems to attract good sunsets. Also fog. That’s less of a bonus!! The weather is playing nicely this morning so once the coffee is finished, I’m off!

Great news, well done on being‘sensible’, glad to hear you’re in much less pain. Look forward to hearing how your little run goes 😊

Thank you! Sensible is often so much harder for me than go all out and worry about it later! The trainers are well rested and I’m ready to go!

Sounds like it’s been a good learning experience rather than a good experience 😏. Glad you are sorted though and on the up. I only run twice a week, mainly due to work but also squash in a Pilates session and a gym session each week. They all target different things which are all important, especially at my age! Looking out for your first run report 👍🏻

Thank you! Once work calms down, I’m hoping to start Pilates again. The physio was extolling the virtues of how good it is for runners (and everyone really!). Sounds like you’ve got a great range of activities going on. That’s what I’ll be aiming for too!

That all sounds so positive 👍and it is surprising how quickly the time goes even though we think it will drag.

Here’s to a great recovery and a happy first run back 😍

Thanks! It’s been “lucky” that this is the busiest time of year for work so that’s been a great distraction too. Everyone’s been so lovely in keeping mg spirits up! It’s a beautiful day for a comeback run…

Well done on sticking to the physio’s plan. It can be very frustrating but it’ll be worth it in the end. Good luck on your return to running. 👍

Thank you! 18 minutes (10 run, 2 walk, 8 run) of pain free running this morning. Super pleased!

I was about to write I hope all goes well with your run tomorrow but realised that perhaps it's today 😂 Which ever it is at least you've got some proper advice so know what to do and more importantly what not too do I found going to the physio fascinating, how they diagnosed the be issues. But I also remember the pain in of my the massage, I literally had bruising ☹️

MissUnderstanding profile image
MissUnderstandingAdministratorGraduate10 in reply to dijep

Thank you! It so good to back out again. Just a short one but so much better than expected with no pain at all in hips or knees. I also have a few bruises over my quads and they’re a bit achey from the massage. Ouch ouch ouch!!! The physio is great so I’ll forgive him!
