An ordinary run this morning and I’m so pleased about that! The knee has been up and down. There was a huge low on Monday where it flared horribly on a tiny 2km run and even walking was awful. It hasn’t been like that in weeks. I couldn’t manage five minutes to the shop and back without pausing on a bench to try and settle it. Utterly miserable.
Over the past few days, it’s improved with total rest from running. Loads of strength this week and a couple of swims. I wasn’t enthusiastic about trying again but this morning was ideal running conditions. Time to it a go and see. Stop before it hurts was my purpose for this run!
A much longer warm up at home than usual. I really wanted to give myself the best chance of avoiding pain. My legs are still pretty achey from some gym sessions but that seems to just be the state they’re in at the moment. Five minutes walk and time to start. Heading along the lane, it was hard not to constantly scan for what might be aching. Mentally, this was a tough run, expecting the pain to strike at any minute. The good news was that it didn’t! Just an out and back. 4km along the county lanes. Unremarkable really but that’s such a relief. Some lovely negative splits which really felt good. It’s such a weird injury this one. I haven’t really lost much speed but at the moment, the distance just isn’t there. It’s frustrating but I’m trying to just appreciate the runs that can happen alongside the strength training which has to be the focus to fix the problem. It’s a funny position to be in. Not comfortable at all but that’s often when the most progress happens?
Last night there was a top quality rainbow over the village. Felt appropriate. You need the rain for the rainbow!

Thank you! IT band healing times say four to eight weeks and I’m still a way off that so I think I’m just being impatient! Still, I can see that it will get better and everything I’m doing will make running better when I am back to normal. Let’s hope there are a few more rainbows along the way!
I can well imagine the mental strain while you were out and so pleased that it went well for you.4k is a good distance to cover, and your times are good. All that strength work is really going to pay off when you do manage to increase the distance.
Thank you! It was so nice to finish and stop thinking about my knee! That’s one of the things that bothered me more than anything-losing the easy, “I’m just going out for a run now” thinking without having to plan for what happens if I have to stop. It’s going to feel amazing getting back there though!
Thank you! I was so lucky to be out when the rainbow was at its brightest. I’d popped round the village while my tea was in the oven to finish off my daily steps. It was there for ages. Nothing like a rainbow to cheer you up! We’ve got a few big lakes and reservoirs nearby so we often get good ones.
Very pleased with the run. MrU did a hilly 7km ready for the event we were both entered in in June. I’ve all but decided that’s it’s too soon for me and would mean having to up my distance too quickly for my knee to stay happy. That’s what the sensible part of me is saying anyway…
You’re right of course - it’s the ‘boring’ stuff which we need to do ! I am always neglecting strength and flexibility and I know it’s so important. Lovely rainbow!😍🌈
I think we’d all rather be running than in the gym! Now I’m getting into more of a routine with it and seeing a tiny bit of progress, I’m enjoying it a lot more. Thanks for the lovely message! Let’s hope we all get some rainbows! ❤️🌈💪
You are so right! I’m really focussing on the end goal-back at half marathon distance. The path and the timing is flexible but I’m definitely going to get there. Thanks so much for the support! ❤️❤️❤️
So pleased that your run was good for you and your knee hopefully is slowly recovering. The ordinary runs are the ones we do need just to get us back on track🏃♀️. You are doing great!. The rainbow is beautiful!. 🥰
You are so right! Doing “ordinary” everyday trumps doing fancy runs now and again. Aiming for consistently doing something-whether that’s runs, gym or something else entirely. Will get there in time. Thanks for such a lovely message ❤️❤️❤️
Glad to hear the pain didn't materialise. The road to recovery can be so frustrating but it sounds like you're doing all the right things 😊 what a great run - negative splits and a rainbow! Yay 😃👏👏👏🌈
Thank you! It’s so nice to feel a bit more normal again. Tonight was a short and sweet speedy run that really blew the cobwebs away. No rainbows but there were some very inquisitive cows!! That made me smile. ❤️🏃♀️🐄
