I’ve rejoined my running club

Hello everyone. I started back with my local running club yesterday evening after a break since 2018. My two boys were small and my wife teaches Pilates on Tuesday and Thursday evenings so the times unfortunately did not suit.

But my lovely wife recently moved her classes around so as I could get back to running with a club. My two boys are bigger now too.

So last night I did a fast paced interval session on the track. I would never have been able to do it on my own. But it was so much nicer doing it with a group. Looking forward to getting fitter with the help of a club. Nice to be out meeting lovely people too. I had some lovely people welcoming me back after a 4 year absence.

To right you were speedy Damien! I saw your Strava stats. 💥💥💥 You’re going to reap the rewards of your running club, I can tell. Fantastic news! 👏👏👏👏👏

Thanks Cheeky. And some of my parkrun friends are members of the running club too. 😀

That sounds absolutely brilliant! Those track sessions sound so much fun. Enjoy!

Sounds just what you need to keep your motivation up after a few doldrums. I did the same last year and really look forward to my Trotters sessions. Enjoy!

Thanks Sandie. Yes it makes a difference to be running in a group. Easier than on your own for sure.

Well done Damien on rejoining your running club after a 4 year absence, among other things you will soon get that sub 30 minute 5k you have been wanting and even perhaps a sub 25 minute 5K at parkrun. 😊 🏃🏾 👍

Absolutely Sir AlMorr he'll get both 💥🔥

Thanks Alan. Yes I’m looking forward to seeing how this goes over the next few months. If anything it is lovely to be training with other people for a change.

I think a special mention is needed for all of our partners for putting up with us runners. I don't think my wife realised how much time it takes. I normally run early in the mornings so not to impact on our time. Tuesday night is normally the exception for club night.

I think all clubs must run on a Tuesday, as I see a lot of groups out.

Speed work/hills with the club definitely pays dividends my Parkrun on Saturday was almost 2 minutes quicker, pb in every Strava segment and that was after the clubs skittles night the previous evening!

I not sure many of us are motivated to do hills by ourselves 🙂.

Forgot to post it on your parkrun post.

Absolutely agree about partners! MrU has started running too so we do some of our Saturday long runs together which is lovely. I have a great deal in that I since go a fair bit further, he goes home, showers and then makes coffee for me to come back to.

It’s not just the time. It’s putting up with all the run chat! Thank goodness I’ve found this forum so I’m not boring him to death with the minute details of all my runs quite as much!

That Ashton Court park run is a real tough one. Great work with your results there!

I think I’m an outlier with loving solo hills. That’s mainly because where I am there’s nothing but hills so you can’t really avoid them!!!

I'll join you as an outlier MissUnderstanding 😉

It’s a fun place to be! 😜

Absolutely. I couldn’t do club running over the past few years as everything was organised on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, including my wife’s classes and my kids football training, preparing dinner and homework. I searched for running groups who ran on Monday and Wednesday evenings but there were none. So I’m delighted and very grateful to be able to meet with a running club now and train properly. But it is a healthy way to spend some time rather than hanging out in the pub. 😀

I recognise those segments Tabbles ! My daughter and I toyed with AC last weekend, but went to Clevedon instead. 😀

Tabbles profile image
TabblesGraduate10 in reply to cheekychipmunks

I am looking for one with less of a hill, might have to look at Clevedon or Eastville.

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksGraduate10 in reply to Tabbles

Eastville has some decent hills  Tabbles (not as extreme as AC), but Clevedon is very gentle. Marine Parade (WSM) is flat as a pancake if you haven’t already been. 😀

No I haven't I'm a one park park runner. Thanks for the recommendations. I know there is a Prom run on the evenings at WSM as well which my club attends.

Awesome mate and I'm well chuffed for you. It's all there in you and it'll start to come out. That interval session pace was crazy and I can't wait to see your runs come in. It's your time now buddy ✅🎖

damienair profile image
damienairAdministrator in reply to GTFC

Thanks so much Dean. I really appreciate it. I enjoyed the session and couldn’t believe the pace I was running at. Even the initial warmup was fast for me at the moment 😂. The intervals were 2 mins flat out, 1 min walk break, 2 mins fast 1 min walk break, 1 min sprint, 30 sec recovery, 1 min sprint, 30 sec recovery, 30 sec sprint, 30 sec recovery, 30 sec sprint, 2 mins recovery and repeat full set again another 2 times around the track. Great session and felt good. I couldn’t have done it on my own.

Sounds lovely-I'm not brave enough to join our local club .I'm sure they are all lovely people but I have also seen how fast they run !

Tabbles profile image
TabblesGraduate10 in reply to Week7

I thought the same, I joined after following online for months. Normally they cater for all abilities. Glad I have as it makes me more social then I would be especially as I mainly work from home.

damienair profile image
damienairAdministrator in reply to Week7

There are super fast runners, medium and slower runners. The efforts were individual and it was lovely and friendly. Honestly just normal people. All levels of pace and fitness.

Oh what a lovely wife you have! And fab to be back with your running club. It must be handy having a Pilates instructor in the family 😊.

damienair profile image
damienairAdministrator in reply to Frenc

I’m with my lovely wife 22 years and would you believe it, I’ve never done 1 second of Pilates even though she is a Pilates instructor. 😂

That sounds a great move damienair. I know you missed your running community when parkrun stopped . This will give you double the fun, and by the sound of it, get you back to your old times.

Hopefully so Dexy. I’m going to fight hard to get back there again.

After procrastinating for a few weeks I have eventually committed and joined my daughters running club. I'd used up my 2 free sessions so had to make a decision. They too meet Tuesday and Thursday with the latter clashing with grandchild care, although the timings of that have altered recently so able to fit it in now. I had to choose between my daughters club which is further away or her husbands which is local; obviously I followed Mrs OMR's instructions 😂 It is a bit off putting watching groups 1 & 2 hurtling around whilst groups 3 & 4 refer to me as 'fast dad'! I really don't know what daughter OMR has been saying about me but feel far from fast when watching the others 😂 😂

Well done. It is always easier when your sharing the pain with others.

Sounds great Damien, Im sure it will be really a positive move and a real benefit. I have to say since I joined my local running club, it has helped my running so much and like you, some of my Parkrun pals are also there, which was really good as they were all so welcoming. We have some great community runs, no pressure, just encouragement and a great feeling of team work.
