Last night I headed out for my end of the working week (I’m a 4 day a week person) run following the same route as the past few weeks. I’be adapted it so that I avoid any dark bits of road and so it’s reasonably well lit. Or so I thought.

There I was running happily along one of the busier roads of my route and then I took to the air. My left foot caught something - not sure what, possibly a tree route, possibly a raised paving slab - and I was flying, or rather heading towards the ground. I managed to get my right leg into a position to save me hitting the deck. Phew! But I did land awkwardly.

I stood up and assessed the damage. Sore right glute and hip. Outside temperature 5 degrees. I’d dressed for 5 degrees warmer. So I figured I either walked home from there - 3 km - or I ran very slowly. I opted for the latter as I was more worried about being cold at that point. Not sure if this was wise for my leg but it was for my core body temperature.

I made it home and did my usual stretches before having a nice hot shower and using some warming body lotion (uk.sanctuary.com/product/sa... on the affected areas.

Today it ranges from uncomfortable to sore depending on what I’m doing. Walking and going downstairs: uncomfortable. Going upstairs: sore.

What do you recommend I do next? Obviously I’m not going to be running on it until I can walk properly but should I be stretching? Walking? Heating the area?

This is my first injury in my running journey and I don’t want to cause further harm nor delay my return (mainly so that I don’t lose the momentum).

Thanks for reading

Not sure to recommend but probably heat and stretching carefully wouldnt go amiss. Sounds like you saved yourself from worse by not actually landing face down!

yes, I did. Hitting the deck would have been far worse!

Rest, stretch gently, warm baths to soothe, that's what I'd do, once you can walk comfortably go for a walk then go out for a run when you are ready and go very gentle to start with, heal well
