Given how hectic our schedules can be I will often opt for 30/45/60 min runs, whatever that may translate in distances. Especially if l want to focus on tempo or intervals! I’m unlikely to ever appear in any race, run with any other human or (god forbid) participate in the Olympics, so l might as well squeeze my run in accordingly without stressing about distances.

I mostly run on circular routes which are, by necessity, distance based.
However, they do translate into approximately 20 minutes (2 miles), 30 minutes (5km), 60 minutes (10km) or 2¼ hours (HM).
The majority of my runs are done by feel. I know the courses and hardly ever look at the watch during the run. The display normally just shows distance left or the clock time.
Which one I do is usually dictated by how much time I have available in the day and how I feel on that day.
And, like James, the analysis happens after the run, not during it.
He's a little bit disingenuous in his video about athletes historically (before GPS watches) doing training by time, as many would have used measured running tracks for distance-based training.

I think James Dunne is great but it’s still distance all the way for me, I’m afraid.🙂
I'm using a Garmin training plan which focuses on three main runs per week. 2x "drill" workouts which incorporate cadence sessions. These workouts generally don't exceed 30 minutes per workout but encourage a higher heart rate for short periods. The third workout is either a "magic half mile" or a distance workout.
I've found this has been the most successful (for me) for avoiding injury whilst building stamina.
All that said, because I have this training plan and keep a level of fitness, to be able to just go out for an hour's run without going by cadence or distance is very enjoyable. It's like a little gift to myself.

The majority of my easy runs are time based, NRC app have plenty of this type of run to guide you.

Nice link.
I’m route/trail first; time second; distance last. In terms of priorities for planning.
But I do aim for training up to distance. E.g. training up yo 10k.
I think many of us who became runners via C25k feel pretty comfortable with running to time, as the programme emphasises time … despite the name.
And those of us who progress to NRC guided runs have also plenty of time-based choices than distance ones. These are better suited to audio-guided runs, as the experience of the audio is the same for both slow and fast runners. Whenever I chose a distance based run, my slow running results in Coach leaving me alone for too long! 🤣🤣
Similarly I have Runkeeper tell me time and pace, just to get a sense comparatively.
Nice link and video. Thank you!

Interesting video. Training for time is my natural happy place because of tech challenges! I trust my watch clock far more than I trust the GPS. It can be hard to predict where a run will finish though so planning can be harder in that respect. I find my NRC app undercounts distance pretty consistently so I’d always opt for a timed run from them!
