June Quest: Check in time!

Morning all you magnificent Questers, as promised here’s your weekly check in just to see how you’re getting on.

I’ll start. Well …… that’s enough of me, how about you all? 😅

My aim to get back into regular yoga and hula hooping hasn’t started well, but it’s only June 8th, so there’s plenty of month left to rectify that! And I’m running plenty so all good there. 😀

Hopefully though, you’re all Questing away like mad. My new add-on to mine is to do better for next week’s check in!

See you then. ❤️

It’s not to late to join in if you haven’t already:

What is the Quest ?

The aim of the Quest is to help you find a focus or goal that you would like to achieve by the end of the Quest period.

The Quest takes one calendar month. You can join at any point during that time.

Some popular goals are:

★ To run three times a week

★ To slowly increase distance

★ To train for a specific race

★ To add Stretch and Strength exercises to your weekly routine

This is a personal challenge, so it’s completely up to you!

If you want to join, all you have to do is COMMENT BELOW with something like:

“I would like to join the Quest…” or,

“ Count me in! I want to…”

Hi cheekychipmunks and running friends, hope your quests are going well. My target was to get up to running 10K distance, as you might remember? I ran for the first time with my running club last night (6.7K) which was just what I needed after a prolonged period of injury. I’m aiming to go out with the same group over the same distance tomorrow (Thursday) evening as I’m feeling OK today. I’m also using the Recover app (now owned by Strava apparently) to keep up with strength and mobility exercises. It’s worth a look if you want help to stay injury free.

In terms of real events, I’ve signed up for the Thrive 5 (5 mile/8K) run at Selsey on the south coast on Sunday 12 June and another run of the same distance along the beach at Felpham (near Bognor Regis) on Sunday 19 June. I hope the tide is out 😂

Good luck with your quest/challenges everyone! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

Recover App sounds intriguing. Do you have to pay for a subscription to get useful workouts or does it have some used free workouts?

David_G profile image

I’m not entirely sure CBDB because I pay a subscription for Strava and it’s included in that. Hopefully someone will be able to advise 🙂

I made only vague plans in my post last week. Essentially I'd planned to continue what I was doing.

Weather and family were a challenge in the first half of last week, meaning I didn't out running until the Wednesday evening.

I did get in my now usual monthly half marathon on the Thursday. It being a holiday day made that much easier. It was my slowest time in ages, but I didn't care one jot. I did the Pwllheli parkrun on the beach on Saturday, but missed my chance to run on the Sunday.

I relaxed into a 10km run on Monday and actually ran faster than usual, just short of my PB. And then yesterday I did my usual short run.

My hope is that I'll be able to squeeze in another longer run this month, maybe even 30km, but I'm not sure if I'll have the 3+ hours to spare to fit it in.

And then there's the holiday at the end of the month. I hope to explore the area round Cromer in North Norfolk, running around most mornings (weather permitting).

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksGraduate10 in reply to nowster

Wonderful stuff nowster. I love how you slot casual HMs in to your plans, and the fact you’re considering 30k is epic. I hope you manage it. I have a hunch you will. 🏃‍♂️👍⭐️

nowster profile image
nowsterGraduate10 in reply to cheekychipmunks

Considering that I was properly tired after the Metric Marathon, I'll need to be careful extending beyond that.

30km is also the distance at which many marathoners "hit the wall", so I'm more than a little apprehensive.

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksGraduate10 in reply to nowster

At least you’ve acknowledged that, and forearmed is forewarned. I’m assuming there’ll be plenty of hydration/nutrition tweaking to be done too.

Hi Cheeky, thank you for heading the Quest this month. I would like to join please 🙋‍♀️

Just back from a few days in Cornwall celebrating our 40th Wedding Anniversary, where plenty of walking was done, a little bit of yoga, but lots of eating and drinking!🍦

I even took my running gear, but was too shy to step out in it in St. Ives...

I now need to get back into shape, so will practice daily YWA, the June calender is Energise...

I will run and want to use the NRC app with Coach Bennet, but am not sure if my phone supports it? I have had trouble logging in on my Samsung S7 any advice gratefully accepted. We have emptied the cache and restarted the phone but no joy.

Will aim for one run a week minimum as still on active Grannie duty 💙 and Mr Bbr is not playing golf presently because of his back so I have less free time.

All accountable again, I will try to shift my holiday breakfasts with healthy eating...but there was a gift of wine, cheeses and choccy from daughter waiting when we got home!☺🎈🌹🎉

Happy Questing all, and happy June.

🏃‍♀️🙏🌹xxx

Update** just tried logging on to NRC and it worked..so glitch is fixed. Yeah

Bad news daughter has hurt her back and can't lift baba so we are needed there more....

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksGraduate10 in reply to Bluebirdrunner

Hey, great to welcome you to our jolly Quest posse BBR. It’s wonderful to have you! 👏👏👏

Gosh St Ives would have been a tall order to run anyway I’d imagine - unless you remained down by the water. We were there a couple of weekends ago on our way home from Sennen, and the only parking we could find was right up the hill. A super slog! 🥵

I HAVE to get back to Adriene. Whenever I see you all posting on Strava about your practices I get serious FOMO. My time is squeezed (you know, being a Grandma!), but it WILL happen.

You’ll love Coach Bennett and his pals. I barely run without NRC nowadays. 🙏🏻🥰🏃‍♀️

yep count me in!!my quest is to include atleast 2 sessions of stretch and strength each week. I feel I'm getting a little carried away with running and I have good intentions of doing the S & S sessions, and then when I see the nice weather I want to be outside!

Im also running now twice a week with a community running group which is brilliant, but one of those nights was supposed to be a S & S session , then I try and do atleast one night of interval training and one long run a week . There just isn't enough time to do everything, full time work just gets in the way!!

😀🏃‍♀️

Hello CheekyChip! I’m looking forward to reading about your Hula Hooping! I have fond and fun child hood memories of that!

My quests have stayed the same:

My quest:

* finish C25k (Zombie Version), my next run is the final graduation one! So by next quest I’m a double-graduate! 🤣

* finish RowAlongs 10k plan as cross-training. I’m still on week 6/8 and I had a Bluetooth technical setback, so lost a bit of time. New estimate is that I’ll finish in July.

* I did indeed start a bi-weekly catch-up post over on the S&F forum

And

* just a few days ago I joined @Beatlesforever on a second round of James Dunne 30 day challenge!

Ha. I never thought that I’d say that exercise quests are like chocolate. One cannot say no!

Happy questing!

I’ll definitely get the hoop out again. It’s such a hoot and an amazingly good workout. My dog and cat are often watching - they probably wonder what on earth their mum is up to! 😳😂

I like and approve of your Quest/chocolate analogy! It’s very true too. 😅

Hi CC. On Monday I ran my best 10k since Autumn 2020. It doesn’t matter that it was 7 minutes off a PB, it just felt really good and it ended without any niggles; job done. Roseabi’s HM Strength Circuit is proving a challenge, but I seem to be able to do a bit more each session (leaving the jumping bit out of the burpees!). So steady progress and no record chasing ! Will it last ?? 🙂

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksGraduate10 in reply to Beachcomber66

Woohoo BC! That’s a huge deal getting back to 10k again, and you know that slow is your friend (although I doubt it was that slow!) I’m incredibly happy for you. Dare I say you might have found the winning formula to stay away from your physio? 🤞🤞🤞

And absolutely yes. It will last. 👊👍⭐️

Thanks CC. Reducing average heart rate on like for like runs would be a good target…will give it a whirl.👍

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksGraduate10 in reply to Beachcomber66

Yes it would be a great target! I was ‘given’ a funky HR monitor as part of my gym membership and I tried it out yesterday. It’s meant to calibrate automatically with little input except height and weight. I’m going to take years to win any of the virtual awards it offers with my naturally very low HR, as I worked darned hard during a 20 minute intervals session and got zero points. 😩😩😩

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66Graduate10 in reply to cheekychipmunks

Yes; but as that is a reflection of your current fitness, so it is to be celebrated! My ARH is 53 today; I know that you are a lot lower…….your diesel engine. 🙂

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksGraduate10 in reply to Beachcomber66

Thanks BC - but my HR is crazy low - reached 37 resting overnight according to my watch! It’s always been that way so it’s nothing to worry about according to doctors. But I do need to make sure I eat and drink plenty as I used to be prone to fainting! Not for years, I hasten to add.

I don’t think my new HR monitor understands me yet, and I’m hoping it’ll adjust to my ‘normal’ 😀

Hi again... well I am still running, and still carrying on with some NRC running, with you know who. All working for me right now. Sorting my mind as well as my body. One of the best bit is, it stops me running further than I perhaps should, or for longer. I do have a bit of a habit of... carrying on to see what is just around the corner, or just over this field!

The runs when I use them do stop me doing this As a result I finish feeling fresher and relaxed and not having to walk home quicker for breakfast!

I have just started a plan... but not saying too much about this yet... but first week, first run done.

Thanks for this reminder and for being here to keep me on track :)

Happy continued questing everyone !

cheekychipmunksGraduate10 in reply to Oldfloss

I’m so happy you’re getting on with NRC and our friend Coach B, OF! Your plan sounds intriguing. Can’t wait to find out more at some point! 👏👏

I agree about the guided runs. You pick one which suits your time/energy/mood and it’s nearly always just right. 🙏🏻

Keep on enjoying. 🏃‍♀️👍🥰

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66Graduate10 in reply to Oldfloss

Glad NRC is working for you OF. I haven’t run with a voice in my ear since C25k…unless you count a brief flirtation with Jog Run Sprint; she didn’t seem very chatty!

I think that I am probably not very good at following instructions and prefer to just do my own thing….Mrs BC …and the rest of the family would probably concur 🙂. Maybe I should give it a whirl on holiday; just for a change. Youngest BC will be around to help with the tech……we’ll see. In the meantime just keep on enjoying your running….lovely to read your reports. 👍

Hello cheekychipmunks

Quest seems to be going ok so far.

I managed to get to Parkrun last Saturday so can safely say I managed 5km. Unfortunately I am back to my weekly London duties (taking my daughter up to The Globe) until July so no Parkruns for a while but I think I will get a 5km in either Friday or Sunday this week 🤞. I am also aiming to run 3 times a week instead of the random once or twice and would like to start increasing distance without injury.

Pilates & strength exercises going well. Weights not so much as last time I did them (coupled with the ones the physio prescribed) had me struggling to walk the next day! But I will persevere and perhaps take it back a notch.

Hopefully with this all in mind I should stay injury free. Keeping on top of the pilates and stretching seems to be key. Just need to find some new places to run. My local routes are getting a tad repetitive (and I'm sure the hills are getting worse!) 😕.

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksGraduate10 in reply to beth_f

Good for you beth_f, it sounds like you’re on top of things! Shame about PR - I have to admit I wince when there’s mention of an activity which might jeopardise my weekly fix! It’s not forever and as you say, you can run your 5k a day either side. 😀

I’ve never tried Pilates. Step aerobics (fuzzy perm, leotard and leg warmers back in the 80s), and plenty of yoga though. Maybe I’ll try a class and see if I enjoy it. I’m glad it’s working for you. 👏👏

Shake-and-run profile image

Well I’m in France, so that is a start. I did a gentle 5k yesterday but the traveling caught up with me today so I’m claiming it as a rest day. Walking and cycling planned for the rest of the week. Not started yoga yet, my excuse is that the terrace is too wet (it’s been raining!). Thanks cheeky for making me accountable.

Hello cheekychipmunks 😀 I’m continuing with the NRC plan but not run much this week so far, work has worn me out, I’ve started the JD 30 day challenge and day 3 completed, maybe that’s what’s worn me out 😂😂😂My quest is to continue with both plans and hopefully get stronger for them.

Well done Sola, sounds like you’re well in control of your Quest. 💪 The JD challenge sounds like something I’d love to have done, but I don’t have time for anything else at the moment - can’t even fit in my yoga, but that will change. 🤞

Hi Cheeky! Well, I have done my first Strength and Stretch workout (using the Faster Beyond Fifty programme for a change). It’s supposed to be a beginner’s workout, but flipping heck 😳 Hopefully it will get easier!I did 21k towards the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee virtual challenge, but no. 3 will have to wait until I get out to France on 20th June. Happy running 🏃‍♀️

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksGraduate10 in reply to Sandie1961

Go Sandie! You must report back and let us all know whether it does make you faster! Is it a daily programme? I simply don’t have time for any more commitments - as is shown by my lack of yoga recently, but I do enjoy a challenge, so never say never. 😀

I shamelessly submitted PR as my Jubilee run! The one I picked only required a run or walk of any sort to get the bling, so I took the cheap win! That being said, I can’t wait for my medal. It sounds lovely. 😍

Happy Questing! 🏃‍♀️💪😀

That's you and me (and more) on the slow/no start to the yoga this month (Goal Number Two for me)

Goal Number One #30DaysWild is going OK (that's wildlifetrusts.org/30dayswild for those who are new to the idea) - some lovely wildlife watching, some Ethels (see cprepdsy.org.uk/news/our-pe..., washing the bird feeders, buying Riverside Gin (! in aid of Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, botanicals foraged from their reserves), eating outside, and reading the splendid Red 67 book... ie not exactly at the wild*est* end of the spectrum.

Goal Number Three is slowly underway as all Google's opened food and treats have been taken to her friend - the same age and still full of life, and I've been in touch with the local foodbank and confirmed they would indeed be delighted with dog food donations.

Goal Number Four (running) is, erm, much like Goal Number Two

cheekychipmunksGraduate10 in reply to GoogleMe

Oh wow, that’s wonderful GM (and I think the gin buying was definitely compulsory for that exercise!). I too love wildlife and that sounds really interesting.’😍 And as for doggie food donations ….. ❤️❤️

Your yoga and running will return, don’t fret!I need to make sure I put aside an allotted time each morning for yoga or it won’t happen. Running takes care of itself I find

Enjoy your Questing. 😀

Hello cheeky! Lovely to see you doing The Quest 😍 Hope I’m not too late to join?

I started my London training plan this week, so my Quest is to stick to it! I think I will as I am ridiculously excited about it (as you know 😂) but next week is going to be really busy, so maybe the Quest can help get me through the extra challenging weeks where life tries to get in the way?

Thankfully this first week is relatively gentle. I’ve had a rest day where I did an hour of yoga (to get my Garmin Namaste badge!), yesterday I did threshold intervals and today it was strength & conditioning at the gym. Tomorrow morning is a 3.5 mile progression run, then a bit more strength & conditioning on Friday. I’ve got a 10k race on Sunday to finish the week off with but after that my Sunday long runs start to get longer and longer. By the end of July I will start to run further than I ever have (which is a little bit scary!).

All the best with your quests everybody!

I have every confidence that you’ll stick to the plan and I absolutely can’t wait to see/hear how you progress. Even though I’m not marathon material, as you know I’d make the exception for London. Enjoy your race this weekend. The bling is calling your name. 🏅😍

Hello cheekychipmunks and fellow questers. Hope it is going well. I hope you manage to fit in your hula hooping but at least you are doing your runs! My quests in week 1 have gone well:1) YES - "run at least 3 times a week" - have run 4 times

2) YES- "continue with garmin coach 10k plan" - yes still on track for my 10th July race

3) NOT YET - "not chase a PB at any parkruns" - I'm yet to do a parkrun as I thought I had a cold last Saturday but it is probably hayfever which I am having a real issue with at the moment - I'll post about that separately!

4) YES - "cross train at least twice a week" - managed to go for 2 long walks

I don't know how I will fare this coming week with my running as my cold or hayfever has made me housebound - I'm about to post for some hayfever running tips - any advice gladly welcome...

Hi Jogger! I’m happy that your Quest is going well, and it’s lovely that you have a race to look forward to soon. 😍😍 Great that you’re following a good plan.

I too get hay fever, but it’s been weird this year. Mine was far worse than normal in May, but it’s very mild now. It’s usually June (grass pollen) that gets me. 🤷‍♀️ I don’t like taking antihistamines, but I do swear by Hay Max. it’s similar to Vaseline, and you put it round (and up!) your nostrils, and I also pop some on my eyebrows! It keeps the pollen out, and it really works for me. Mine is lavender scented and it’s lovely.

Good luck with controlling your hay fever and of course your ongoing Quest. 😀

The great thing about a simple goal for the Quest, in my case to finally run 10 km, is that it's a simple yes/no. It's still a no.

Obviously I've run further than that so far this month across a number of runs but the warmer weather is a bit too much for me. I'm waiting for a cool morning when I've had plenty of sleep and then IT WILL HAPPEN!!

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksGraduate10 in reply to Yesletsgo

No worries YLG, you’ll smash that 10k when the time is right. Running is meant to be enjoyable in my book, so why do it before you’re ready? You’re still running, so no need to push the distance. 😀

Originally I wanted to get it done before the anniversary of starting C25K. Now, I want it done within a year of finishing C25K. I've reached a stage where I can't see any reason barring injury that I wouldn't be able to do it which is almost as good as actually doing it so, like you say, I'm enjoying the process.
