Nice and easy

A 5km recovery run today, I started so slowly that Mr Yes was a bit concerned until I told him that my plan was to run really, really slowly then speed up as fast as I could for a while towards the end.

This worked well. What was interesting was that I gradually speeded up a little even though my perceived effort and heartrate didn't alter too much...

...until, that is, I got bored and decided to run as fast as I could along the stretch of pathway leading from the concrete road through the fields to the sea wall. It felt really good, finally stretching my legs, the pace on my Garmin showing faster and faster until the pain in my chest made me look at the HR monitor. Oops, time to slow down, that was definitely zone 5!!

The final 1.5 km was much more sedate and by the time I finished the HR was back in Zone 3 where I wanted it to be. Overtook a dog walker, an old geezer (ie probably within 5 years of my own age), who, I thought, gave me a funny look. As I walked back home I passed him again and we made eye contact. To avoid awkwardness I said, 'I've run 5km this morning that's enough for me!'. Cue big smiles and him telling me that he used to love doing 5ks. Just shows, I shouldn't judge people, he was probably just a bit jealous :)

PS negative splits for the first time in forever :) :) :)

I know that feeling, yesterday we did a short run and then sprinted at the end for as long as we could and it felt wonderful, and then as you said, it didn’t and we walked
