Hoping to avoid the IC

Yesterday's weather was a bit grim, the ground was wet and my shoes are new so I didn't want them getting muddy. Mr Yes was keen we should run so instead of going across the fields we ran along the road, through the park and then along the waterfront to home, a nice 4k for me while he carried on alone to 5k.

When I got home I noticed a twinge in the side of my right foot. It reminded me of when I strained the ankle ligament on that side so got the foam roller out and it helped a bit. In the evening I consulted Dr Google and I think I have a peroneal tendon issue. Couldn't find an elastic bandage so wrapped a silk scarf round my midfoot. It helped.

Today the slight pain was still there. Found my ankle support and wore that all day. When the central area of the foot is supported it feels fine.

I was wondering about going for a run tomorrow but there is a forecast of 40mph winds so no chance. I may give it a rest on Friday as well and see if I'm OK for Parkrun on Saturday as the weather should improve.

I'm wondering if the problem is from running on a hard surface. I noticed there was a camber on a lot of the pavement and Google said this might cause the foot to be overstrained when it hits the ground because the forces aren't applied evenly due to the slope.

I really hope it's not the shoes...I've run that route quite a few times before with no issues in my old ones.

For now I'm fine, so am resting and elevating where I can. There's not enough pain to call for paracetamol and I hope it will resolve if I take it easy for a couple of days.

New shoes can need a bit of time to getting used to. When I first used my new shoes, I got aches in / around my heel. I have used them now several times on the treadmill (very short distances) and it seems to have improved, but the last time I still felt a slight ache. It generally goes away while running, but it kinda annoys me too that my new shoes give me this ache. I thought I would need no time to run them in, as they are the same as my old shoes, just a version or 6 younger (literally the same shoe but version 8 instead of 2 or something). Do you switch up your old shoes with your new shoes regularly in order to run the new ones in?

My old ones have lost all their oomph so I don't really want to run in them any more. Maybe I need to buy another new pair and alternate them ;) The new ones are quite different to the old, maybe it's just a matter of getting used to them.

I laughed when you said about new shoes and mud ! The mud on your shoes is the running medals of your runs:) Having said that.... I was very loathe to christen my new ones after torrential rain the other morning! :)

Your foot could just be one of those odd twinges that we get from an awkward landing or rougher terrain...but if there is persistent, deep pain, do take expert advice.

Hopefully, just a twinge and all will be well on your next run :)

Well done on the run anyway!

Thanks OF, it's feeling a lot better today. The weather here is lovely apart from the strong wind and half of me is saying 'Go on, have a run' but I think it's prudent to have another easy day. If I can allow it to heal rather than straining it further it's probably safer in the long run, scuse the pun.

It does sound like it might be shoes/pavements. Maybe rest it for a couple of days and see. Hopefully it will just be a temporary niggle.

This is what I'm thinking. Last time I ignored a niggle I was out of action for 6 weeks.

That’s annoying YLG. As everyone else has said, it could be either the shoes, the road, or something else else. If you hadn’t mentioned that you’d run the route before without issue, I’d have suggested the camber. Rest will no doubt help though, and I hope you can avoid the IC. 🤞🤞🤞

I'm leaving it a day or two and my next run will be on grass/mud. I'm pretty sure a day or two of rest, compression etc will sort it out.

It sounds like you're doing the sensible thing by taking a little break, applying compression, etc It may also be an idea to have a gait analysis? In any case, hopefully it's just a little niggle 🤞

I had a gait analysis for the last pair I bought and went back to the same shop. The guy who served me is, I think, the dad of the assistant who served me before and seemed to know his stuff. He looked at my old shoes and said he was getting me the same type of support etc. I'm going to see how I feel after a couple of days off and a run on grass and 🤞 everything will be ok going forward.

Hmmm 🤔. You are definitely doing the right thing by resting up. I'm wondering if you have tried a run since posting? Perhaps go back to your old shoes for a few runs until the issue clears up, then try the new ones on a different route? I hope things improve.

When I woke up this morning it felt OK so I did Parkrun but took it easy. So far, so good. I don't want to wear the old shoes as they've lost all their supportiveness. I think they may be where the issue started.Three days slobbing around seems to have done the trick 🤞
