Tales from a Slow-Jog Comeback #1

Well, I tentatively tried out my toes in a short walk-run-walk outing, on a sunny cold February day, one where I had booked a leave day.

So after waking, sun and blue skies appearing in the bedroom window, hubby and I thought to do a little walk. And then I thought I might as well put on my running gear and try out my slow joggle with my hopefully newly healed metatarsals. So he walked, and I slow-jogged every 5 min or so for 2 minutes.

So I count this as week number minus 4 of C25k. I feel still ca 2-4 weeks away from starting back into C25k.

I still feel some tenderness in the ball of my foot, but the little run felt great. It reminded me how much I liked running more than walking. But I could tell my running fitness had gone, even though I rowed every day. Knees felt great, but back pain was there again afterwards, which surprised me. I thought rowing would have strengthened my back. But I’m also still waiting to finally commit and buy the 0-drop but shoes with a supporting medium stack height, I’ve decided on.

So a bit more patience, and a few more tiny walk-runs. In the meantime I’ll continue on my 5k to 10k rowing plan, but I’ll be looking forward to the next walk-run outside at a time when spring is in the air!

Oh and this little 2k walk brought me a 700mile postcard for my everlasting LEJOG journey!

Happy running everyone!

This is so awesome. You've been brilliant keeping up the rowing and growing ever stronger. Steady back with the running and go super gently because then hopefully you'll get back and stay back 🙏

Well done and glad to hear you're taking baby steps back to running. It must have been so frustrating for you these last few months. By the time the weather improves you'll be ready to take on the world :)

HUGE well done to you. Slow and steady, really, and you will get back there and I cannot wait to welcome you back on the C25K programme, as you pop in to Catch up Corner to tell us all about it. So many of us have done it... and we know that you are, when ready, going to be just fine.

You got out and you had a little joggle... ( I love it).... I am thrilled for you x

Well done CBDB - every little helps as they say! I’m well acquainted with the “running with a Walker” concept too - although in my case it’s because I run so slowly, walkers can usually get past without too much exertion! I hope you don’t suffer from any after effects and good luck with the build up to C25K and beyond!

Hello CBDB, I see from your profile that it was November when the ic called you. So good that you have worked on maintaining fitness by pursuing non-running avenues. I really know about how great just a few minutes of running can feel after the ic. I had a bad knee injury from a gardening fall: fractures, meniscus tear, Baker's cyst, cellulitis and arthritis (presumably not from my fall) were all subsequently diagnosed by various appointments, x-rays and scans. Like you I had to build up from a place where C25k W1R1 was too much. It wasn't the running, but the swelling up afterwards that demonstrated what I could or couldn't do. Here's to your onward recovery going well. Well done on your patience and perseverance. 😊🏃🏻‍♀️👏

Have you had some medical folk involved with your injury?

That’s such good news. Well done on all your commitment, research and alternative endeavours. Especially lovely to hear of the enjoyment you felt from the mini-jogglettes. Even those ‘minus weeks’ are surely all positive steps. It’ll take a while to readjust, however much fitness you built through other means. I wouldn’t be disheartened by the sluggish feel of the first run-walk-run, but it’ll certainly be interesting to note the subtle shifts and changes as you reacclimatise. 🤞
