Eating like a Hungry Hippo

What a beautiful morning. After the night rain came blue skies and sunshine. Too good an opportunity not to go out for a 45 minute recovery run.

As each run is completed the more I am learning about myself. I have discovered it is taking me 3km to get into a nice steady rhythm - about 15 / 20 minutes. By 5km I am purring like a well oiled Beemer but by 7km more like an old rusty Lada.

I am also eating like a hungry hippo after longer runs. Its getting quite ridiculous if I'm honest. I know we have to celebrate our runs but not with an actual tub of celebrations !!!!! I can't keep my nose out the trough 😱

Ah this made me laugh! I know what you mean about getting into your rhythm at 3k, and I’m also pretty familiar with the hungry hippo 🦛 aspect too 🤣.

I was putting my weight gain down to increased muscles too. I need a rethink or a wired jaw 😃

A wired jaw would be rather drastic! 😀

Actually, I now weigh myself after runs to make sure that my weight doesn't drop too low.

I've dropped from 82kg (May 2020) to 69kg and don't really want to lose any more.

I have allowed myself to buy treats again, knowing I'll be running them off at some point in the week.

I lost so much weight when I was regularly running longer distances (alas, over a year ago now, I'm not back there yet). I began to get quite concerned about nutrition etc. Injury stopped all that.

I love it! The way you describe that great feeling in mid run when you feel like you can run forever! And that hunger... especially after the longer runs.So for you it's a tub of celebrations. I attack the jar of peanut butter with a spoon.

So glad you're enjoying yourself so much.

in reply toRoxdog

I'm just thankful I don't have any peanut butter to hand Roxdog ! 😁😄

Purring like a well oiled Beemer - sounds really good! 😊 Rather a pity about the old rusty Lada!😂 After what length of run do you find extra eating is needed? You will be pleased to hear that I have now had a NRC guided run. 4th attempt at trying. I tried to tag you as I mentioned you in my post yesterday, but I couldn't manage to make the usual tagging method work.

Yay! I'm pleased you have finally managed to get it working. Hoorah!I wouldn't exactly say that extra "eating is needed" - it is just being eaten ......... 😂😂😂

I'm generally finding anything around the 7km mark and above tends to result in me emptying the cupboards and fridge. In the event that there is nothing decent left such as crisps or chocolate I have been found scoffing beetroot sandwiches - yes, i know ......

😀

The further I go, the more hungry I think I am !!!!!!

My husband and went 'odd' with our eating nearly three years ago now. Low carb even Keto. I have run 10km before breakfast and not been hungry at all while running and not ravenous afterwards. I've never really mastered the science of it all as my husband has. However, I do remember my 14km and 16.1km(10mile) which were both after breakfast seeming to need to eat and eat and eat afterwards!

It has been a long time since I ran, but I do remember that once I pass the 10K my stomach feels like an empty well for a day or 2. Might be a sign to grab some extra proteins! When I worked my way up to 10 miles, I grabbed along a protein bar, which I munched right the second after my run was finished on my way home.

in reply to

Actually BS, I think that is a very good idea. If i can munch on something straight away (or even during perhaps) then maybe i wouldn't be climbing through the cupboards and fridge when i get home.

Do you think those cereal bars would be any good? Or, are there actual "runners bars"?

in reply to

I would go for the real stuff, with loads of proteins. That will satisfy more plus it is good for the recuperation of the muscles.

😂Made me smile and laugh, too. You’re doing great. In a couple of weeks, your Lada will feel Beemer, and there’ll be a new distance where the creaks are felt.Maybe you need to find a fresh strategy for post-run refuelling? More ‘meal’ than ‘treat’… (Ok, maybe that’s a step too far!)
