Ticking boxes

Today's interval run completed week 2 of the NRC HM plan. All the boxes are ticked but apparently in the wrong order. So much for doing it my own way lol.

Today was 'Run strong, repeat' - 8 intervals at 5k pace with 2 intervals at mile pace. The 5k pace was much quicker than I'd do a 5k but felt comfortable, probably because I knew I only had to run for 90 seconds. The first mile pace interval (5th of 10 intervals) was great, on the second one, the final interval of the 10, I thought my lungs were going to burst (but they didn't, you'll be pleased to hear). Garmin tells me my fastest pace was 5'12, NRC says 4'21", I'm quite impressed with myself (of course, I have no idea how long that pace would have been maintained for), I've never gone that fast! It was a bit nerve racking going that speed along the frozen muddy path full of potholes made by the horses people ride along there.

So that's my running for the week. I've already run 11km more than last month, over 36 km, so I might try and get to 50 km by the end of the month if I can get the 8km long run done within the next 10 days. I'm not going to stress about it though, after all it's supposed to be fun, isn't it?

Tomorrow I'm travelling so now I'm ticking the boxes on my to do list to make sure I don't leave any of my running kit behind this time. Next week I'm supposed to do a 'hill workout', that'll be fun, it's just as flat where I'm staying as it is here at home :)

Wow that mile pace is impressive! I think I would be lying in a greasy heap if I tried that. 🤣🤣🤣 Sounds a great plan though with a bit of variety. Good luck on hitting that 50k this month. Btw your 10k badge has disappeared!

I think NRC is just being nice😂 I hit that pace very briefly, the average for the interval was 6’43”, the fifth fastest. The fastest interval was at so called 5k pace, only 5’30”, with the other mile pace interval being 7’11’! I obviously wasn’t working as hard as I thought, I can’t imagine keeping 5’30 up for a full 5k! (I haven’t done 10k yet, I scraped the 60 minute graduate badge ;) )

It’s really good to have a plan! Even when you ignore it 😂

That sounds like a hard workout - well done 👏.I'm going to be following your progress with interest (no pressure intended 😅) as I am also tentatively starting on the NRC HM plan (on MY terms, i.e. no rush, plenty of extra rest days...) I am having a bit of a January reset - taking it easy, nurturing my niggles with some long neglected strengthening exercises 🙄) so I've only done W1R1 so far! Slightly daunted by those speed runs, they sound like far too much hard work 😲.

I rather like speed runs, it's interesting to challenge yourself (as I keep telling myself 😬). Plus that nice Mr Garmin knocked another 2 years off my age, what a charmer!
