Do you remember those toys from the 70s and 80s which you couldn't knock over? Every time you knocked it down it bobbed right back up again. I'm beginning to feel like a weeble. In summer I ran the Chester 10k in dreadful heat, felt awful and immediately succumbed to a bad bout of diverticulitis. Through September and October I slowly got going again and dragged myself back to 9k on the 2nd December. I was regularly running 2 or 3 times a week and I began to feel I could get to 10k again, even if it would be slow. December saw me laid low with a really terrible cold. I kept testing and testing but it seemed not be covid, just a reminder that covid is not the only respiratory illness out there! At the end of December I got out there again, one run before Christmas and another 5k just after, feeling good and loving being out again. Then we went down to visit our younger son and his family and I took my running kit with me, determined to do another while we were down in Devon.
And wham! Diverticulitis struck again, wiping out more than a week and leaving me feeling like I'd been run over by a train. So here we go, bobbing up again. This morning I went out for the first time since I was ill, very gently, mixing walking and a little slow running for 3k just to see what it felt like. It felt fine. The sun was shining. The birds were darting in and out of the hedges. It was good to be out. In another couple of days I will go out again and maybe go a little further or run a little more, just gently and slowly getting back into the swing. Weebles (and snails) rule!

I really hope I can get back to it IP. I've decided the thing to do is to resign myself to taking it slowly and doing lots of little bits. This is not my natural style which is rather more chuck the kitchen sink at it but I think it might be the only way!
I remember them! Great that you're feeling ready to get yourself back on track after all those setbacks. Take it gently. And may we have more days like today. December lacked these sort of glorious days when (assuming one's able) we just has to go out and run.
You’re determination is the winner here…and an inspiration to everyone who reads this..sometimes life can just knock you for 6 but, like the weebles, you might wobble but won’t fall down…good for you Gwenllian1 …keep going, we’re all cheering for you 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you mummycav! I've taken lots of inspiration from this community myself. So many determined people on here! It makes such a difference to share the experiences with others.
It certainly does…& if there’s anything you want to ask, there’s always someone who will know the answer…or if you just need a little pick me up, there’s always someone who’ll be there x
Thanks Fiona! Hugs always very welcome! There are quite a number of us here who have had various injuries and illnesses. Great to see all those still running!!
