Fun run abandoned

Having been for my booster jab this morning I had planned for a lazy day. That was until I was so inspired by SueAppleRun that I just had to head out for a fun and happy run.

Up the stairs, long sleeve warm Kalenji top on, underwear check (3 holes appearing in seam but hopefully ok 😀), man tights and shorts donned. Warm ups done and to the door and it is icy rain. Hmm! In for a penny, glasses off, hat on and away we go.

I decided to mix it up a bit with an interval based pace run. I hate pace as it kills me but, I felt the need to defeat the gremlins.

During my slow warm up it was blooming wet. Dont forget, I have never done proper rain before. Then came the first interval which I had programmed as 0.4km at a pace of 5 - 5:15 and off I went. Lots of buzzing from my watch but no idea what it was saying as no glasses. By now the rain had turned to a torrent of hail stones bouncing off my face.

What on earth am I doing? I started questioning my sanity. After the second interval I wasn't too far from home so called it a day with a cool down run back to my front door.

To cap it off huge puddles had appeared in the road and oh yes, waiting at the crossing a lorry went past snd drowned me from head to foot.

Looking back it was great fun and actually I really enjoyed doing the intervals.

It felt good to mix it up a bit.

I only covered 2.7km in about 15 minutes but it was certainly entertaining.

Thanks for the inspiration Sola 😀👍

It’s funny getting caught in torrential rain, but you had the hail as well! Actually, maybe it’s funnier looking back on it after it’s done. I always wear a sun visor as it keeps the rain off my glasses as well as the sun out of my eyes! What I really hate is peeling off the soaking wet clothes afterwards - but the post rain hot shower is divine! Well done. A great 2.7km run in the rain and hail! Tick! ✅

Oh yes. A big tick indeed.

Now I am warm, looking back, it was really good fun. Just got paper in my shoes now to prevent another pair of shoes ponging 🤣

No wonder you cut the run short, but flip you are fast, what happened to easy runs? loved reading this and thanks for the mention, sometimes you just have to run don’t you?

in reply toSueAppleRun

I love my easy runs and after reading about your wonderful run I just felt the need to get out. For some reason I felt that right now I needed to banish those gremlins who told me I should never attempt the hated pace runs.

I did manage to defeat them though - hoorah ( even though the hail gave me a great excuse to cut it short before I collapsed ) 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I don’t think I’d run in jail, heavy rain would stop me too but i’m hoping for snow this winter to run in

in reply toSueAppleRun

I'm hoping to avoid jail. I cant imagine the exercise yard is big enough for a 5k 😁😁

Nor me! Have managed to avoid it thus far 🤣.

On my first 10km attempt back in early February I got hit by soft hail (graupel) about half way through. That was odd.

Sounds good, Alan. 400m is a real challenge. 🙂

in reply toIan5K

It was Ian. In real terms just under 2 minutes of panting 😁

I'm going to give this another go as it was uncomfortable but do-able and pleasing afterwards. Just need to get through the actual "doing".

I set up my garmin with the "pace" from the runners world pace calculator based on my usual 5k speed and then shoved in 3 min recoveries between intervals. Not sure where the 3 minutes came from though. I probably thought I would need a long rest 🤣🤣

The amount of recovery time between the runs is equally important, apparently. The idea is not to finish the whole session absolutely wrecked and exhausted, so 3 mins sounds good.

Bear in mind it’s not recommended to do this type of workout too often. No more than one a week, probably much less.

Yech... just reading about running in rain gives me the shivers! I admit, if it rains, I don't go out (of running that is). Even if it looks like it will rain during my run, I won't go out. If I am running and it starts raining (but softly), I will continue. But nothing more... Well done for you, though I call you crazy 😜

Ah well done! I know what you mean, I did a run quite a while back, and I hadn’t even finished my warm up walk when the rain came, it was absolutely torrential! I really, really almost turned back muttering and swearing. But it felt so good once I finished the run. A good run for you 😊😊😊.

Booster 16:45 - on the road 17:40. Got lucky with a dry spell. 3rd time this week I told people, myself included, "...not running today". Come run time I just can't help myself. I have no idea how this has happened to me. Prior to C25K running just wasn't on the agenda. Ran last Friday when Arwen took a break. First wet run on Monday. I don't know...

in reply toMrBassmanjazz

Oh yes, I know.

I've just been out again ...... just for a quick 2km and I have no idea why other than the sun came out for a while - still damn cold though.

As you, I had no interest in running prior to C25K. In fact I positively disliked running as I couldn't do it mainly due to cigarettes and alcohol.

On Run Days - I find I have to drink Beer to use up calories or MyFitnessPal tells me off.

I was a conscientious objector. I thought, when I gave up smoking, I ought to get fit. It has only taken 35 years to start that project.

I did wonder how I was going to approach the cold. Don't want to stop, The thought of a Treadmill... NO! Swin instead? So far 5º has been the coldest. Run Tights- Great! I don't like going out in the rain but don't mind if it rains when I'm out.

Still on 3 x 30mins \week. We'll see what tomorrow brings :-)
