Hi All ,

After building up to 5k 4 times a week I have suffered left Achilles pain. After having physio for 6 months they finally x ray and find this. Anyone have any practical experience of how I can continue running without having surgery.

This is a tricky one, I've suffered with achilles tendonitis for years and it has affected the type of exercise I've been able to do. I started running during the first lock down, expecting the pain to kick in but have only felt it when I have pushed myself. I have taken that as a warning and have slowed down and accepted that I'm never going to win any races or run for miles. So obviously take medical advice but if you can run, keep it slow and steady and don't push yourself. That way at least you can keep on running. Hope this helps and good luck 👍

Hi there,Thanks for your reply.

The pain/soreness is always after running or when I get up from sleep. It abates over 15-30 mins if I wear a shoe with a gel heel wedge. I 'm running every other day and it doesn't seem to get any worse but also not any better. I'm running 5k in 31 mins (60 yrs old) so am not breaking any records - just want to keep the ticker going ;)

I've had various levels of pain over the years and currently I am completely pain free (touch wood) so there is light at the end of the tunnel. I find rest (sorry) and lots of calf raises help. I also wear orthotics prescribed by the physio and would not run without them. I don't think there is a quick fix for this problem, you just have to work out what is best for you. I'm 60 too and was doing 5k in 38 mins, but have recently started slow running, watch this space.... . 😀

I suffer from the same problem. My work around is a very cushioned shoe, I purchased the Asics novablaster 2 which takes the shock out of landing. Additionally I wear compression socks. When running I take it very easy on hills. Continuing any exercises given by Physio in my book is a good idea. I also Ice after most runs with a bag of frozen veg. These actions keep me running at 74 but the problem is still in the background.
