It's wonderful when a parkrun plan comes together ......

....... and this was a pretty cute plan, but did it come together? Not a chance :-(

One of my Quest targets is to extend the distance I can run at 13kph (4'36"/k). If I could get back to 5k I would be challenging my 2014 parkrun PB of 22'58" - no chance really, but it's a goal of sorts. So far, I'm up to 1k outdoors and 2.5k on a treadmill, so lots of scope for improvement.

So today the idea was to take the first k of parkrun comparatively easy (say around 5'30"), then go for it for the next 1.5k to the halfway turn, aiming to manage it in 6'54" to tick a box on my progress chart, then stagger home as best as possible.

And I knew the plan was doomed after 500m in 2'22" rather than 2'45". Much faster than intended, but not quite at 4'36" pace and not feeling as though I could go faster. Hung on reasonably well to turn at 12'00", but it was 12'41" back for 24'41" - normally a time I'd be quite happy with :-) , but it wasn't what I wanted to do today! My fastest 1.5k turned out to be the first, at 7'06", so there's the next thing to chip away at.

Hey ho, onwards and upwards :-) It's a run, not a race ......

22:58 is a hugely impressive time. You must be first in your age band in many a parkrun. 😮👏👏

Unfortunately not - he was 3rd today. The first one in VM70-75 was 23.15 but 1st and 2nd are club runners.

Shame. Still a moral victory I think, without the support of a club! 👏👏

Even more unfortunately, 22’58” was 7 years ago. But on a really good day, I can sometimes still go sub-24 🤞

If I was at the same parkrun as UpTheStanley AND Oldgirlruns I would run with OGR, UTS would probably lap the both of us and perhaps Dexy5 as well. 😊 🏃🏾, he is an amazing runner 🏃🏾 👍

Think you’d be very frustrated with my speed Al, you’re much faster than me - but thank you for the kind thought!

💥 Speedy Stanley nonetheless.💥

I was impressed when I checked Eastville’s results today and the first guy over the line did it in 14 minutes something. That’s plan ridiculous!

over61andstilltrying profile image
over61andstilltryingGraduate10 in reply to cheekychipmunks

Especially as the bronze medal time at the olympics was 12:59.05 and that of course was on a running track. The British chap's time was 13:09.97 and he was 11th. Perhaps your Eastville fellow will appear on a few podiums soon. 🏃🏻‍♂️😊

Will have to keep an eye out over61! 🏃‍♂️💥

You keep chipping away UTS! It is always good to have some achievable goals, not always easy to know what is achievable, of course. Here's to you moving nearer to your goals. 😊🏃🏻‍♂️I was just wondering whether you could find out your age grading percentage thingy for that 7 year old PB and wonder how that compares to your age grading percentage thingy today. Happy injury free running to you and Dexy 🏃‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️😊

Oh dear me!!!!!!! Of course! Definitely injury free! I shall edit my reply straight away! Note to self, "Proof read more carefully!"

Age grading - good question 😀 - it was 72.4% for 22'58" back then (2015 now I've checked back), and I matched that with a 23'49" in Dec 2019. Today I got 70.5% for a 25'00" official parkrun time (24'41" was my watch time and gives 70.7% - I don't start it till I get to the start line, which takes a while). I think my best (not) parkrun score was 70.9%.

Did I ever mention I'm a stats freak and keep records?

I had an inkling, but the detail and extent of your records is impressive. 😊

Just have a bit of fun with it; you are too wise to confuse not making a near impossible target with failure. I would have a tenner on you to crack it this year though!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏

UpTheStanleyGraduate10 in reply to Beachcomber66

If you mean 1.5k in 6'54", yes I would hope so 🤞. Sub-23 parkrun - nah!!

Beachcomber66 profile image

You will just enjoy chipping away at it. Lots of us need to have something to work on. I would love to get back to 28:17… that isn’t going to happen either!

I couldn't sustain 4'36".

I have done one km in 4'33" but that was in December last year, and I've never been able to repeat it. My most recent attempt was in July and like you I didn't pace myself correctly. I realised my mistake and gave up after about 250m.

Cmoi profile image
CmoiGraduate10 in reply to nowster

Me neither nowster . The only way I can run fast over any distance is downhill, with a following wind,on a good day. I only had one attempt at the 1km speed challenge as I really didn't enjoy it.

That's still a great time UpTheStanley , and not something I'm likely to emulate any time soon!

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10

That's still a good time UTS, well done, I noticed on the result page of my homeparkrun that the man who briefs the new runners and is in the 75/79 age group ran yesterday in a time of just over 29 minutes, he usually runs in around 26 minutes, perhaps the long break made him run a little 'slower, I will see him this Saturday as I have decided to go and run my first official parkrun since last year, that will be one week earlier than I intended.

Oldgirlruns profile image
OldgirlrunsGraduate10 in reply to AlMorr

That’s great news Al - I look forward to hearing how you get on at ‘real’ parkrun next Saturday!

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10 in reply to Oldgirlruns

I will report back to Damienair's forum on Saturday, but I will wait until I get my official email from the Parkrun I run in, I wonder if anyone can run a (not) parkrun, say on a Friday and run on a Saturday at a official Parkrun, not sure if that would be allowed, if I intend to run at a official Parkrun I won't run a (not) parkrun as well.

UpTheStanley profile image
UpTheStanleyGraduate10 in reply to AlMorr

You can run a parkrun at 0900 some Saturday and start a (not) parkrun the minute you finish, if you really want to Al 😀

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10 in reply to UpTheStanley

You're joking😂, no way would I do that, lol. Ha🏃🏾👍

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy5Graduate10 in reply to AlMorr

Whoop whoop Al, well done you. Yes you can still log (not) parkruns if you want to. I haven’t bothered now the real thing is back.

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10 in reply to Dexy5

I did notice that ONE runner ran a (not) parkrun during the week and an official parkrun on a Saturday, if I don't intend to run at an official parkrun I will continue with running a (not) parkrun as before, I think it was Cheekychimpmunks who said I was the KING of (not) parkruns, lol.
