Happy weekend. For any of you new graduates whom have started running during COVID-19 world you may have heard of a thing called parkrun. parkrun is a free 5K which takes place every Saturday morning all around the world. It is for everyone, slow, fast, able, disabled, big, small and everyone in-between. You can walk, jog, run, run/walk, it's not a race, just a run in the park and loads of us here on Bridge to 10K did it religiously every Saturday morning.
Obviously we can not do it anymore. Although hopefully it is not far away. parkrun started back in Northern Ireland last weekend. So until parkrun returns for us all we take part on our own in a pretend parkrun every Saturday morning. We post after our run and let everyone know how we got on during our run. The little run report can be done over a post virtual parkrun coffee and treat/cake. (parkrun is all about the after run coffee and cake, and meeting friends old and new). It can be run/walked on any route close to you which is 5K. Does not have to be done in a park, you can even do it on a treadmill.
If you are a new graduate and would like to start, all you have to do is a 5K run/jog/walk anytime over the weekend and write a little run report under this post. It's like a little community and it is good fun, sets you up nicely for the weekend. If you want to you can register on the parkrun website and you can log your 5K (not)parkrun. In fact you can log any 5K done during the week as a (not)parkrun on the website. I only log Saturday runs, when I remember.
Looking forward to my run today and also looking forward to hearing from all of you. I am so sorry that I did not reply to all the run reports last weekend. I have not run in just over a week. I had a working week from Hell. In fact the past 2 weeks have been horrendous. A lot of stress, 2 tenders, long long days working till midnight and plenty of headaches. One more week to go and then I am away with my family for 2 weeks. Phone and e-mail will be off. But I promise I will reply to all the posts this week and I will be on the forum more.
Happy running and have a lovely weekend.

I don’t know how you manage to do what you do Damien, my HealthUnlocked usage has dropped off a cliff since I went full time. Thank you for doing what you do manage to do 🙏
We had an early run today as we’re off to see my mum and stepdad. It’s been raining overnight and it’s quite humid but I think we’re slowly acclimatising. What doesn’t seem to be acclimatising so well is the GPS signal. I’ve attached the Strava feed from Katnap and my run. We did actually run together honestly!! I certainly don’t remember running through the golf course!
Anyway, I did run 5k despite what both Garmin and Strava says, as I did my usual route and I know I ran it fast because I wanted to sit on the wet ground when I finished! So 26:53 was when I reached my usual lamp post. 😁
Have fun everyone and hope you have an easier week next week Damien 🙌💪👍
Ah, well, yesterday I came back from my run in my Brooks Revel 4s thinking I love these, they’re so light on top but there’s not enough bounce…so I looked at Katnap’s Hyperion Tempos and thought ‘they’ll do!’. There is now a very pink pair of them winging my way soonish 👍
26:53, what a fanstastie time!!! Im just pleased to be under the 30 mins now, but reckon it will take me another good few months to get a sub 28!😀🏃♀️😰
Thank you HH 🤗 It does come. It took me 3 years after I started C25k to go sub 27mins. I didn’t think I’d ever get there but you never know, things just fall into place. I think RED January really helped too.
Hello damienair and everyone. We were up early and dressed, ready for our not parkrun today. Just about to step out the door and the heavens opened. We are talking absolutely torrential rain. So stepped indoors waiting for it to subside. By the time it did, we no longer had time to walk to our start point, run 5k and reach our cafe where we’d booked a table for breakfast . What could we do but get changed into jeans and walk straight to the cafe for breakfast. I now feel very full and slightly guilty, but the run will happen tomorrow, I hope.
You did the right thing. The cafe was closed for months and now you can enjoy indoor dining. Good call. Enjoy your run tomorrow. I'll be running tomorrow too. Ended up mowing lawn and a bit of gardening before spending time working on these bloody tenders again whilst e-mails and phone is quiet.
Better timing than me Dexy - I was ready to run at ten to six this morning 'to avoid the showers', then the heavens opened! But by ten past it was just a drizzle, so a slightly damp 5k was completed. 😀
Hope you have a wonderful break with your family Damien. Thank you for all you do for HU.
Back to (not) park run for us due to our restrictions here in Western Australia. 28.45 for me which really should have been faster as the 5k route we ran was easier than our Park run. I’m blaming my HM on Monday 😜
Like some others we went out early as well. The rain is set for the day so we thought we might as well get out sooner than later. It was quite refreshing, just gentle rain, but still quite warm. Nothing special to report regarding distance, time or pace but a nice run. I stopped twice to chat to people!
The rain got a bit heavier as we walked back so we decided to go to the cafe in the village rather than walk another kilometre or so to the golf club. Good decision - in the cafe they told us that they were no longer running the cafe in the golf club. I am not surprised because it was never very busy, often we were the only people having breakfast and hopefully that would only be for another two week if parkrun returns.
Fortified by scrambled egg and bacon on toast we went across the road to the monthly village market to buy bakewell slices for afternoon tea and pies for evening tea. It's a good job that we run on Saturdays with all that food to burn off!
Off to Scarborough next week so probably no more runs until Saturday but plenty of walking instead.
This morning I ran my 55th not parkrun in a time of 32.55, last week it was 32.31 which was a BP not parkrun time, I am a bit surprised at todays time as on Wednesday I ran my second 10 miles run, I wasn't sure if I would be fully recovered from that run this morning, the weather was a little warm despite me starting the run at exactly 8 o'clock, nevertheless I enjoyed the run today.
Thanks Damien, I posted my (not) parkrun that you asked me to host while you are on a well deserved holiday on the wrong forum, C25K whereas I should have posted it on the Bridge 210K forum, Roseabi the Administrator asked me to post it on the correct forum which I have now done, enjoy your holiday.
I was going to do a long run today but the heavens opened this morning. I did a 5km run on Thursday morning (27'44"), just eight seconds slower than my PB.
Like you I'll also be off work for a fortnight in a week's time. My plan is to be a little more active whilst off but it'll be mostly more walking whilst keeping the running about the same.
Very well done. Enjoy your time off too. I am so looking forward to getting away on Monday. Walking, hiking and exploring. Fresh air and no devices. No email and no phone. Bliss.
Hi Damien I enjoyed a 5k run along the canal yesterday so I’m counting that as my not Parkrun as today is a rest day. I had a happy run apart from my heart rate monitor falling off and nearly colliding with a cyclist. I finished in 22.53. I’m beginning to see the difference in speed vs effort now that I’m transitioning more to mid foot and even some fore foot running.
Sorry to hear about your fortnight Damien - you will definitely deserve that holiday. I did my (not) parkrun yesterday for reasons too complicated to explain. Took it easy and finished with 30.41 - however the most interesting thing yesterday was shopping for new shoes!
I've recently noticed an occasional twinge in my right foot and since the last time that happened was just before I bought my current pair during the first lockdown, I did a quick check and realised I've done about 1100 km in them - whoops! 😊
So off to our local specialist running shoe shop - had a gait analysis which confirmed that after 3 years of running I am still an over-pronator. I tried on some Hokas (not my cup of tea), the latest version (Omni 19) of my current Sauconys and some Mizuno Wave Inspire 17s. They didn't have my exact size in the Sauconys so will get them in for me next week when I will make a final decision. They are the safe option, but I was quite intrigued by the Mizunos - apparently they are good for heel-strikers, which I am. Watch this space! 😀
Interesting, I've just swapped brands the other way. Had Mizuno Wave Equate for last 2 years and now have some pink (!) Saucony Guide 14s (which feel even better - like slippers!)
You have been clocking up the miles JP! UpTheStanley wears mizuno wave inspire but he got the 16s before they went out of stock. He too is a heal striker and I didn’t realise the significance.
When UTS tried 16s and 17s he preferred the lower heel drop of the 16s , probably because they were more like his old 15s. I bought him an extra pair for his birthday so it will probably be up to 18 by the time he needs a new pair. 👟👟
Well done Jonathan. I wear Brooks Adrenaline GTS, I over pronate too. Last year I bought the Mizuno Wave Inspire 17’s. I honestly couldn’t run 2K in them. They did not suit me at all and I found them very uncomfortable. But that is just me. Shop wouldn’t take them back. So I found a new running shop and they took €20 off the price of my Brooks GTS21’s. I’ll never switch shoes again.
That's very disappointing Damien. I have gone for the Mizunos and am pleased with them, 2 runs in, but they are somewhat bouncier than my Sauconys! Have a great break!
Hi Damien and all! Absolutely no (not) PR today and I’m not ashamed to admit it! I haven’t run since last Sunday due to having had an annoyingly persistent cold and also being away in Devon.
We’re home now, and the cold has pretty much gone, but I had 10 choir friends over for a BBQ today and I needed to prep for that. Now I’m watching England thrash Ukraine, and I’ll give myself tomorrow off and resume my running in earnest on Monday. It’s not often I take a break from running, but this is what the doctor ordered. 🥰
Hope you are feeling much better now Cheeky. A break is good every now and again. Nothing like a BBQ with friends. Due to work and working late I have not run in 2 weeks. I’m officially on my holidays now for 2 weeks. I’ll be turning off my phone and email. Going to West Cork for 10 days to walk, hike and explore. I have a College friend coming over this evening for a few beers and a BBQ. Looking forward to it. I’ll try and get out for a run later.
I have never run an actual Parkrun. I have up until a month ago been doing the (not)parkrun for a couple of months until my calf muscle decided to ‘pop’ at the end of a 5K , jeez that hurt. Now I’m trying to find the motivation to get back in time to run my 1st Parkrun on the 26th. Just need to get out there and try that new muscle out.
Once you do your first parkrun you will be hooked. I’m really struggling with motivation myself at the moment. But I know that when parkrun returns I’ll be running for a reason.
I managed to slip in a slow 5k on Friday (35:40) to complete a niggle free holiday 2 weeks. 31k of relaxed running and my Brooks Adrenaline shoes are now well and truly run in. Sad to be leaving Scilly, but a school of dolphins did turn out to say hello as we sailed back to the mainland yesterday; always an uplifting sight. Off to find breakfast before a chilling out day prior to our journey home oop north tomorrow. Deep breath then into the HM training plan!! 💪
It was a wonderful two weeks CC; Mrs BC was caught rebooking for 3 weeks without consultation!!! Can't take my eyes off her for a second!
I think our Penzance/Paddington train will pass some miles west of Bristol, but will wave all the same 🙂. Our usual non stop route goes your way; London was faster and had some cheap first class tickets!
I’m taking 2 weeks off to leave a very stressful few weeks of work behind me. I can’t wait. I’ll be doing loads of walking and hiking. Planning to also do a Sea Safari down in West Cork and see some whales and Dolphins. Nothing like seeing them up close.
That is brilliant Damien. This year on Scilly we were treated to dolphins and of course THE walrus! A couple of years ago we had an encounter with a minkie whale which circled the stationary boat passing directly underneath. This was between Eigg and Rum. We could see it all as the water was so clear. Seeing these creatures is a special experience; there is a definite connection when they are swimming close by and looking you in the eye. Hope you have a fantastic break and lots of sightings. The people of Scilly would be very pleased to pass wally the walrus on to you. He has been creating havoc in the harbour at St. Mary's!Clean off those binocular lenses and forget work!!
I’m up to 47 (not)parkruns, having never done a real one. I’ve volunteered 90+ times, but had never really felt like running. I went along to give moral support to my wife. Lockdown changed all that and I’m now a runner. I ran today, out early before it got too hot. Back now, breakfast consumed and feeling pleased with a time of 29:39, my first sub-30 run for a few weeks. It felt really good, if a bit warm and sweaty! Looking forward to my first real parkrun as a runner, but I will mix some volunteering in as well. I hope everyone has enjoyed their run this weekend. Keep it up!!
Well done for all that volunteering, parkrun can’t happen without those that help out. From September you will be able to earn a red volunteer shirt for 50 volunteers and a black one for 100, just like the runners.
Yes, I’ve seen that. Definitely going to get those. I’ve really enjoyed doing it and wouldn’t want to stop, even though I can run it. I’ll just try to get the right mix!
Awesome volunteering count Kipperrun! 👏👏 I make a point of volunteering once a month, but it’s quite noticeable that it’s generally the same faces each time at ours. Shame because it’s a big PR, often with 500+ runners. You’d think more would volunteer really. 🙄
Thanks, ccm! Our parkrun is pretty big too - we’ve topped 600 a few times. But there are times when we’ve been really stretched for volunteers. I’ve never seen it as a chore, though. I’ve only been narked a couple of times by some ungrateful so and so’s comments or complaints. Thankfully very few and far between.
Great running, a sub 30 minute 5K is a good run any day. Wow well done on your Volunteer efforts at parkrun. I’ve I think 73 parkruns completed and I think 18 volunteers. Looking forward to running and volunteering again at parkrun.
Well Im off the baby hedgehog feeding station now, seeing as they can now feed themselves at 5 weeks old, so Im back to my every other day running. Had a lovely 5km run yesterday, 29:50 so not bad considering Ive spent months wanting to get a sub 30 5km. Got a way to go to do it in some of the times listed here, but I'll get there. Today I did a10km today, although today's was soooooo hot, so I didnt worry to much about the time just wanted to still enjoy it.Can't tell you how excited I am to do my first 'proper' parkrun at the end of the month!!
I’m quite jealous of you never having been to a real parkrun 😁 There is going to be such a buzz at the First Timers Briefing! Hopefully there’ll still be a First Timers briefing!! You are certainly going to hold your own with the times you’re putting in HH 👏👏👏
Very well done and great running. A sub 30 minute 5K run any day is a good run. Congratulations also on getting your baby Hedgehogs to this point. I can’t wait for parkrun to return either. It’s still a few months away for me. You’ll love it.
Very well done and super running doing 7K. I have not run in 2 weeks but I’m going to make up for it over the next few weeks after my Holiday. I’m so looking forward to plugging out and going offline for 2 weeks. Happy running.
