Happy weekend and Happy Easter. For any of you new graduates whom have started running during COVID-19 world you may have heard of a thing called parkrun. parkrun is a free 5K which takes place every Saturday morning all around the world. It is for everyone, slow, fast, able, disabled, big, small and everyone in between. You can walk, jog, run, run/walk, it's not a race, just a run in the park and loads of us here on Bridge to 10K did it religiously every Saturday morning.
Obviously we can not do it anymore. So until parkrun returns we take part on our own in a pretend parkrun every Saturday morning. We post after our run and let everyone know how we got on during our run. The little run report can be done over a post (not)parkrun coffee and treat/cake. (parkrun is all about the after run coffee and cake, and meeting friends old and new). It can be run/walked on any route close to you which is 5K. Does not have to be done in a park, you can even do it on a treadmill.
If you are a new graduate and would like to start, all you have to do is a 5K run/jog/walk anytime over the weekend and write a little run report under this post. It's like a little community and it is good fun, sets you up nicely for the weekend. If you want to you can register on the parkrun website and you can log your 5K (not)parkrun. In fact you can log any 5K done during the week as a (not)parkrun on the website. I only log Saturday runs, when I remember.
You might notice that I have changed the title this week and removed all traces of that awful word (Virtual) following a quick discussion with Alan last week.
Looking forward to my run today and also looking forward to hearing from all of you. Happy running and have a lovely long weekend.
Damien
I've pinned the post. So please respond over the next day or two in the below thread. Happy running and Happy Easter. Enjoy the Hot Cross buns and Chocolate Eggs.

Good morning Damien, I am posting this to you from the finishing line where I ran my first full non stop 5K for a few weeks, I set my metromone app at low cadence, my time was 37.10, lovely sunny morning where I am in Central Scotland, I have already seen many runners today. A very Happy Easter to you and your family.
I am quite happy about that run, next Wednesday I intend to run 6K and increase the distance by 1K on a Wednesday until 10K, as you may know or not I signed up for the London Vitality Virtual 10,000 so it's important for me to get to 10K again.
I noticed that Al. I am on the 10k comeback trail myself but not aiming for another virtual Vitality this year. I am going to focus on distance and keep my pace down; the prospect of a race tends to speed me up. Lack of discipline!! The medal and tee shirt for last year were something to behold (you may need to sunglasses to avoid being dazzled!!). Hope things warm up a bit for you by the end of May. We will be cheering you on.
Well done on your 5km AL Morr and non stop as well and your time was good as well. Your injury must be getting better now. If your cadence is set to low is that short steps . My cadence on Garmin is 160/170 last run I did but can be higher but it seems to go higher if I go faster. Is that how it works and short steps? A lovely sunny day here as well but maybe by Sunday/Monday freezing . Enjoy when we can 😎
Thanks Doris8, my recent right leg injury is completely healed now, but between that and all that recent ice and snow, for the last few weeks I have been repeating some of the weeks of C25K, I didn't need to do the whole course again but I ran with Laura runs 3 of weeks 3,4 and run 2 and 3 of week 5.
This morning I ran non stop with my metromone app at 167 beats/steps /cadence a minute, it does guide you to a certain extent to keep to whatever pace you choose, last year when I ran 10 miles I set it at 168 and completed that run in around 2 hours 3 minutes, of course everyone is different, a runner could run 150 cadence a 5K in sub 25 minutes whereas someone else could have cadence at 190 and run a 5K+40 minutes although most at 150 and 190 would be much slower and quicker respectively.
Thanks for that great reply. Your time on 10 miles was brill. I would never get to that pace working it out a mile. I’ve got wee legs so my stride doesn’t get very long and I think your supposed to try and take shorter steps and have your foot strikes under your body when you run which I’m trying to do.
Yes Doris, your technique is perfect to avoid injury. Cadence is basically the number of steps per minute but for those of us with shorter legs, the ground we cover is less. When you’ve been running for a while you will notice that if you go faster at the end of a run then your cadence will increase.
From September you will be able to get a T-shirt for 25 runs, 50, 100, and 250 RunWillie. But we will have to start paying £15 (Aus$ equivalent) including postage. Parkrun has got so big that they cannot give them away anymore.
So looking forward to running the real thing in June.
Thanks Dexy5 Think he wanted the black one so got to run the 100 🤣 not that I’m going to need any arm twisting for running 100. Loving Park Run. Can’t wait until my UK VRB’s are back ❤️🏃♀️
Yes if it hadn’t been for the pandemic I would have got that 💯 last year. It is special. 72 for me so far - it is addictive and I’m glad you are enjoying it.
Just got back and about to do Adriene, so I thought I would catch the moment.
My body has been rebelling this week and I thought I wouldn’t be able to do this run but it went ok.
I’ve had a twinge in my upper left back since Wednesday. I think it’s a combination of recovery from all the March miles, running into the wind for 11km on Sunday and tension from work and driving again (I don’t like driving). Thankfully it’s only in the muscle. Pre-running it used to be in my vertebrae and there is no way I could run with that. I now have a strong support system around my core but it doesn’t stop the tension does it?
So it’s a bit achey today but nothing I can’t cope with. As it’s cold I could get away with a compression vest for extra support and it’s back to the winter leggings after being able to wear shorts earlier on in the week.
So 28:43 this week. I started off slow and carefully but it all loosened up nicely towards the end 👍👍👍
Have a good running week everyone and I hope you enjoy the Easter break 🐣
I think driving is a pain in the bum anyway BC. Thankfully I don’t have to do it too often atm. I tried it by bus once and it took 3 hours 🤣 It’s only a 25 minute drive!
Thank you cheeky! Funnily enough, I did really enjoy Adriene today 😃I had the feeling you enjoyed driving 😉, I do enjoy navigating though. Give me a map over satellite navigation any day but you can't really do that when you're behind the wheel...well you could but...
No (not) park run for me today. I did a 10km run yesterday morning plus a couple of walks. This morning's leg stretching was my usual (since Tuesday) morning 3km loop (plus 1km of warm-up/cool-down walks), so that doesn't count. Maybe tomorrow...
Having felt like it was Saturday all day yesterday, I also did my (not) parkrun then.
We thought we’d go to the Lakeside parkrun route as it was sheltered from the NE wind but travellers have settled in the business park and were guarding the entrance. We felt a bit uneasy so headed for the Billy Trail on Hayling Island.
It was surprisingly quiet but I did find it a bit tough , having done HU 10K this week. But I’m quite happy with 34.55 for a trail run. No post run breakfast available there but I did take cereal bars with us to keep the munchies away.
This is just a flat trail as it’s a disused railway line cheeky. I think I’ll start my training at QECP in walking boots. You’ll find it a doddle I’m sure. 🏔 🏃♀️
I ran a lovely retro 8k yesterday on my old friend the towpath. It’s been a while. So when I awoke this morning and saw the trees swaying in an ominous fashion, I fleetingly wondered whether I could be bothered to do (not) PR.
But - I didn’t take my dog yesterday (she lost her footing on the riverbank a while ago and had issues getting out, and I was worried it would happen again), but her face when she saw me togged up in running gear. 🥺🥺🥺 How could I not run with her today?
It was a brisk NNE wind and bitingly chilly, so I was happy to trot around in 34:47. Still in capris though - once I’ve worn them, the full leggings go away for the season. So I have Flossie to thank for my run today. 🐕❤️
Happy Easter everyone. Enjoy your runs and eggs! 🐣
Hope Flossie enjoyed it!! I need to put my winter leggings away really cheeky. I can't close my running drawer properly anymore, it's getting so jammed full!
Good morning all! It is really cold up here on the North East coast; one of those days when your cappuccino turns to Frappuccino in ten seconds flat!I pondered long and hard before running today following an unfortunate collision between my achilles and a falling heavy play pen yesterday. Why do people in their late 60s, with no grandchildren in sight, have such a thing in the study waiting to cause mayhem? A left over from when our dog Molly was a puppy over 8 years ago! We really must de clutter sometime!
When I had stopped swearing, I iced the spot and proved to myself that frozen mixed veg works just as well as frozen peas! By this morning the pain and swelling had gone, but I stuck some KT up and down and across the tender bit; probably just a mental comfort blanket, but hey it worked; a trouble free steady 5k at 34:14 with only 6% in zone 5. So my fitness is starting to pick up a bit. No treats from the cafe today; diet time ☹️. Still, my world seems like a better place this morning. Hope everyone else had a great run too.👍
Oh phew, I’m so glad there were no ill effects after your mishap BC. Sounds like you had a great run too - I can imagine your relief. Yay for the frozen mixed veg! 😅
Thanks coach!!🙂 I was really lucky to get away with that. When it happened I thought the worst as you will have gathered.. Still, onwards and upwards. Time to get some K's in!
😂😂I have packs that we use in cool boxes Dexy, but this problem needed a close fitting wrap around shape to cover the back and each side of the heel. We rarely eat frozen veg, so, in an emergency, I put the pack to good use; this closes the case for the defence !! 🙂
The gel ones are especially for sports injuries and are flexible . You can also heat them in the microwave for alternate hot and cold treatments (which I needed post ski injury). I would thoroughly recommend.
Very impressed by your resolve on the cake front today. 🧁
Thanks. I will have a look. Frozen veg and hot water bottles are probably a bit retro, but then so am I! The KT was the real thing though; no sticky brown parcel tape to hand. 👍
After two sunny days it was cold again this morning, so I put on my long-sleeved parkrun shirt.Usual route but a bit longer this week now that my 10k is out of the way.
Only major thing to report was a failure to get any reply from the bacon butty shop as we were walking back . They were late opening so we went home for nice warm showers then ordered our 2nd breakfasts.
Wasn’t it chilly RAS? Shame about your bacon butties. I had a similar situation yesterday after my 8k. There’s a lovely little coffee van which parks up in the car park and does delicious coffees and cake. So why don’t they open until 10am? I’d finished my run by 9:15, so when the lady who was setting up told me I couldn’t order anything I was very deflated. 10am? Really?
I wasn't cold once out of the wind. Our Saturday route is usually fairly sheltered, depending on the wind direction. The cafe is only 5 minutes from home, so Geoff had his shower then phoned to order and fetched the butties while I was in the shower. We had a fallback if necessary - the other cafe has started serving food at weekends from a shack on the nearby golf course.
I had two shirts and jacket this morning. North East wind on this coast....straight from the Arctic! Like the second breakfast idea; you have to balance out the lost calories 🙂
We always try to have something with our pals post parkrun, so we continued the tradition (without pals, sadly) for the non and (not) parkruns. At the beginning we had to cook our own, but now the Village Cafe is doing takeaways
That's right. I bought the short sleeved one before I did my first parkrun but then on the day didn't wear it in case I didn't finish or something. Back at the campsite I wore it all weekend!
Happy Easter Damien and all, we didn’t run 5k today but had a lovely little 3k along the seafront where Parkrun used to run and noticed the parkrun turn point on the prom has been repainted, I thought of everyone running today when I saw that
Oooooh, that sounds promising! Exciting! I'll have to keep an eye on our '5's, you can hardly spot them atm. We have our Junior parkrun back next Sunday (yaayyyyyy!), all being well, so they'll have to repaint the '2's.
Two months before my first non virtual parkrun - hopefully (if I can get up in time!) Painting my other front fence yesterday made me ache all over (even if a lot of it was sitting down!).I passed my first (slow) 8K today (chuffed!) and my 5K split was 46'27''. My 5K on Wednesday was quicker at 44'51'' , so that will be the one appearing on my (not)parkrun record.
Not warm, but still sweaty - I had my running top over my T shirt. (might invest in a top with a full zip so I can take it off easily - but perhaps that won't get used much after the upcoming coldish snap. And I have still to use my rainjacket I bought in December.
Wednesday was humid and 20 degrees, today was barely 8 degrees with a cold breeze - crazy.
Happy Easter everyone. I hadn’t been for a run since the HU 10k on Sunday. Don’t know why, but just couldn’t be bothered. I couldn’t not do (not) parkrun today though, if there aren’t too many negatives there 🤣 so, long leggings and jacket back on (5c felt like 1c) and my 2nd fastest (not) parkrun this year at 31.24. Yay! Starting to speed up again. A quick shower and a bowl of cereal (didn’t have time for my usual bacon sarnie) then Mr S and I packed up a picnic and headed out in the van for a walk in Sherwood Forest with my stepdaughter and 2 granddaughters. First meet up since before Xmas and a truly wonderful afternoon 🥰
How lovely fir you to have a family reunion Sandie. I bet the grandchildren were glad to see you again, especially if you had packed chocolate eggs in that picnic.
Another Saturday, another (not) parkrun! Just a quick message as it's getting late- although it seemed a bit cold for t-shirt and shorts at 9 this morning, when I got going it wasn't too bad at all. Bit of an easterly breeze for the first half, but I made up for it in the second half, finishing with a welcome 29.48. Happy running one and all!
Today was my second 5km along the canal since easing of lockdown, and my entry for #HerVirtual5K. Strava gave me my second fastest 5k of 45:57, so I’m pleased!
Keeping myself accountable on my return from the IC. Didn’t make Saturday as leaving 2 days between runs for a few weeks but did do 6k today, well 😃. Hope everyone has had a lovely Easter 🐣
