Half marathon training problem ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

Hi everyone! I wondered if anyone could offer any advice with a training problem Ive been having. I finished my couch to 5k, moved up to 10k and am now training for my first half marathon which I optimistically (or foolishly!) signed up for at the end of August. I *think* things are going well training wise but I am having a bit of an issue.

After about 12k or so I start getting a numbness in my toes on one foot (always my right foot) which you can ignore for a bit but gets really painful and I think if I try and carry on like that for a complete 21k Iโ€™ll be a broken woman ๐Ÿ˜‚ I love my running shoes and theyโ€™ve always been amazing but I wonder if itโ€™s them or if itโ€™s a foot thing? Have any other runners on here experienced this or resolved it?

Please get your fit checked, it sounds like your shoes may be too small.

Or measure your feet and check the cms against your brands size chart, obviously your shoes need to be bigger than your feet but you might need a bit more room. You want at least .5 cm to a full cm extra room for your toes to splay out.

You love your shoes, brilliant, but how far have you run in them? They should last 600km, I can sometimes stretch to 800km but really notice the difference when I move onto new ones. Happy running ๐Ÿค—

Good recommendations from the people here above me. I have also heard to check out the way your laces are done. I don't have the chart myself, but I know someone has a chart here of different ways to tie your laces. It does make a difference sometimes.

Yes, relacing made all the difference in both of my shoes, and both are definitely not too small. I now know to lace all my running shoes with the volume lacing technique (#1) and a heel lock (#3).

No numbness ever again, and never had a single blister.

See if that works.

And don't lace them too tight. Maybe loosen them a bit - not so much that they fall off or worse you get blisters from slipping.

As the others have suggested, it could be your shoes or the lacing, either the way you lace or they are too tight across the foot. . Your running shoes should be at least a half size bigger than your everyday shoes. I wear a full size bigger but it depends on the brand and sizing what would be best for you. A good running shop will advise.

When I put on my socks I also pull them at the toes area to give me a bit more room before I put on my shoes. I canโ€™t bear socks that feel too tight. Iโ€™m not suggesting tight socks are the cause of your problem but it feels nice ๐Ÿ™‚

Well done on the 12K! Have you had a look at the Marathon Forum? There are lots of people there training for a HM so you can get great support and share your journey ๐Ÿ™‚

Thereโ€™s no doubt that the further you run, the more your feet swell or feel the pressure, when theyโ€™ve been perfectly fine on shorter distances. I agree with others, check the soles, check the lacing, check the size.

What about your socks? I had some that shrank in the wash, and were far too tight...
