Rain was forecast this morning but when I got up it was dry. I'd bought some new running leggings on Saturday and was keen to try them so thought 'why not?' and set off after a coffee for my third consolidation run.
Where I normally go is very muddy and overgrown at the moment so I decided to take the route of my favourite long walk which goes through fields. After running for about 15-20 minutes I decided to carry on until I reached 2.5 km. This took me back onto my usual route. Climbed the steps up the seawall and admired the high tide but the path wasn't inviting so came back down and continued on my way. Managed to avoid the puddles and once I'd gone far enough I turned around. Checking my phone (Google Fit) I thought I might stop once I'd done 30 minutes but decided I felt good so kept on running and hit 5k as I reached the road for my 5 minute cooldown. I was almost sorry to stop but a gentle drizzling rain had started. It felt quite refreshing. The new trews worked a treat too, no need to worry about nettles or ticks!
I felt a bit achy but stretches and breakfast sorted that out, wonder how I'll feel tomorrow? Checked my phone when I got home, I'd run 5.25 km in 45 mins 11 secs which I am very pleased with. Reassuring to know that I'm capable of doing the distance when Parkrun starts (never been before). Really pleased I made the effort, I've never actually run a full 5 km before.

Massive congratulations on your 1st 5k, a great achievement. I hope you haven’t stiffened up as the day goes on. I often found in the early days that a gentle walk in the evening helped. Happy running 🤗
It's weird how exercise seems to loosen up the joints! I'm hoping I'll be ok, I didn't feel tired at the end in fact my legs seemed to want to carry on (unlike the rest of me which wanted breakfast )
If I’ve got bananas I’ll have one with my coffee but today there weren’t any. Couldn’t do without the coffee though, maybe this’ll change if I do longer runs
Nothing, in my opinion, is quite as magical as that first 5k. From starting at running out of breath after 1.5 minutes, to running for a full 42 minutes was totally unbelievable for me. I hope you have a big smile on your face all day.
Well done you. A great feeling isn't it? Like you I busted 5k when I wasn't really trying to. I just felt ok on the day and kept going. Psychologically that 5k did me the world of good, I now seem to be able to run for longer without struggling on a regular basis, hitting 5k or close to most times. Enjoy this fantastic achievement.
