What a gloomy morning. Again. Didn't feel like running but my husband was already in his running gear with coffee ready when I woke up. My hero!
He suggested a different route to our usual, running to the marina instead of across the fields. The NRC plan for today was a speed run. The marina sounded a much better bet so off we went.
Running on a flat pavement is so much easier than negotiating a bumpy muddy path. I realised I was going faster than usual. Mr Y was ahead of me today instead of following so I did my best to keep up with his pace. 1st km done - wow that was quick.
In the second km we detoured and admired the boats and the view for about a minute then turned back. Another sub 8 minute km. Wow, this is fast for me.
Carried on and completed the third km. Still under 8 minutes (just).
There was a little bit of path left so I just went for it and ran as fast as I could. It felt really good, like an old diesel engine that's having a few blasts at high revs to clear all the carbon deposits
I reached the bench where I'd decided to finish and pressed stop. 3.14 km exactly without even trying. Overall pace 7'52". I've quite impressed myself
All those slow slogs over the summer have obviously built up fitness, but the increase in speed is due mostly to the surface and the cooler temperature. Despite feeling quite pleased with myself I still don't think speed tells you very much about your running.
The weather is too gloomy for a photo of today's run so here's a dolphin in the lovely blue sea for you instead

Funnily enough I find a pavement harder going than uneven surfaces. That's why I was thrilled that not all the towpath I ran on this week was tarmac and included cobblestones!
I wouldn't want to go too far on pavement - about half of this route is brick paved but then it turns to a sort of gravelly/tarmac softer base.
I've never run on cobbles - I can barely walk on them. One of the scariest driving experiences I had was driving across former East Germany in the early 1990s. The autobahn towards Poland was pretty neglected after all those years of closed borders. I was bombing along when suddenly, ahead of me, the road surface changed from tarmac to cobbles. I was convinced I was going to die!
How wrong I was. The cobbles must have been laid in the 1930s but German craftsmanship being what it is, it was as smooth as you'd want and considerably better than some British roads today.
I was wondering where in the uk you were to have such blue sea and skies! Love the dolphin pic.
Super run! It’s so great when you find you’re faster than you think. It often seems to happen all of a sudden. Definitely the upside of running mostly on tricky terrain - when you finally get flat if feels like easy mode!
Thanks, seeing the dolphin was amazing. Normally when I spot one it's disappeared by the time I say ''dolphin* but this one stayed with us. Magical 😁Wouldn't want to be this close to a submarine!
No indeed!!! We used to watch Dolphins off the coast in West Wales, and have seen many , many off the beach at Tudweiliog in North Wales, I even swam with seals off one of the beaches on the LLyn ! As you say, magical!
