Hi lovely people, I hope this is ok but I’m asking for my husband who has been regularly running about 8 to 10 k but he now has hip pain and had to stop his run early after the pain was so bad. He had rested it for a week but still painful. As for me I’m still trying to run for longer than 30 minutes but it’s tough in this heat I have to say . Will give it another go today ...

So sorry!! 😞 I had the same…hip pain…sadly it took 6 weeks of no running… walking only… to recover.. once the pain disappears google hip strengthening exercises…I am back out there again running albeit very slowly!! He needs to do couch to 5k again to get back into it slowly…
I did wonder if a week was not long enough to recover, I’ll suggest that to him thank you. Hope all goes well for you too.
Well hello Annieapple! How lovely to have you back with us- hope you’re doing ok !

If it's not getting better after a week it's time to see a medical professional (eg. physio) for advice.

I’ve had a grumbly hip since January Mazzarooni. I went to see a physio who gave me some exercises and while it’s not better, it is on the mend and I’m allowed to run again. Fortunately I’m the world’s slowest runner so I don’t really stress it when I’m trotting! If your husband’s hip isn’t better after a week, I can highly recommend seeing a physio!

"Hip" covers a lot of different possibilities. The IT band connects to the hip and runs down the outside of the thigh to the knee. Pain at the top can feel like hip but it's not the hip joint itself. Then you've got your abductor and adductors but those normally present pain more to the front or rear, often confused with groin pain. You say "regularly runs 8 to 10k" once a week/ twice/3 times? Has he recently increased distance or no of weekly runs?
Rest in the short term of course but physio probably best option. If he can think of things like Does it hurt when not running? Can he push on/ find the source of pain? Does heat or rubbing it help?
More than likely he'll need to do some hip opening exercises, especially if he's only recently stepped up duration or overall amount of running.
Blokes are awful at going to see people for help but he might happily Google hip exercises and try some of those... 🤞🏻
