Covid Vaccination advice please!

Anthony59 profile image
52 Replies

I had my Covid Vaccine (Astra Z) back in early March and a few days after I had fatigued a lot earlier than normal when running. A week or so later I was getting Chest cramps and really struggled. This did ease after a few weeks. I had my second Jab last week. Just went for my first run since and after a few hundred meters stopped in my tracks and felt pain in my chest. When I got home I then had a continuous cough for about 10 minutes. Scary!

I am not an anti vaxer and I do not want to put people off but my Running is definitely stopping for now.

I would like some feedback because there is nothing on Google about Running and the Vaccine.

I am sorry on what happened to you Anthony59 after you got regarding the 2 Covid 19 vaccinations, for the vast majority of people the reaction and after effects have only been very slight, however, for a few the after effects have been far from slight, if the after effects for you remain severe I would advise you to seek professional medical advice.

Hello, I had astrazenica 1st dose a week past Wednesday, was fine during the day, then chills and fever and sick in the evening and into overnight, the day after I felt much better but tired and lethargic as if getting over a bad flu, so had a few days off running, then ran slow 6k on monday this week which felt really good like I had had a booster 😅 and hopefully if all goes to plan will be running my first ten k next run 🤞🤞i think if you are having chest pains you should call your doctor to get checked out, hope you feel better quickly

Hi H4CS! I just wanted to say good luck with your 1st 10k next week! I'm hoping to do the same, having been close recently, but never achieved 10k! I had my AZ 2nd jab yesterday and just tried to fun 6k, but had to give up at 5k and walk home as I felt so sick! Never had that before. Anyway - I'm going to go for it on Monday, and see what happens.

Good luck!

You are right to stop running at the moment until you feel fully recovered, you should have had a leaflet explaining some of the common side effects after your first vaccination.

When I had my first appointment I had a sore arm the next day and about a week later I felt that I had a cold coming, which only lasted for a day.

At my second appointment I felt drained like I was coming down with a cold and wanted to sleep I took some paracetamols and a couple the next day which made me feel better I didn't feel like running for almost a week after because I felt I didn't have the energy and when I eventually ran my performance wasn't affected.

The nurse at my doctors practice at my second appointment asked me did i have any problems first time which I replied no, she said if I feel tired to sleep and take some paracetamols if I needed to.

The link below takes you to the advice from Public Health England and what to do if you are worried about side affects.

Hope this helps and take care

I would get checked out for any chest pain - or at least call NHS 111

Do please get checked out..we are not medical experts and everyone's reaction to the vaccine is different.Pain of any kind is worrying..and your chest pain needs checking.

Hi Anthony59 , you need to consult a medical professional for advice. Your chest pains might or might not be connected to your vaccinations, and might or might not be serious. I don't know, nor can anyone else on this forum (even if they're medically qualified,) never mind Dr Google. Please get properly checked out.

Bit of a catastrophising headline there Anthony, which, thankfully, is not borne out in your account of what happened, given that you recovered from what happened a week after your first vaccination, so if it lasted a few weeks, you must have had perhaps a couple of months symptom-free. That doesn't sound as though your running has been 'destroyed' by anything.

But you have had symptoms which can sometimes indicate a serious health problem which urgent investigation can prevent turning catastrophic.

Idiosyncratic adverse reactions can happen after any vaccine (either coincidence or cause) A strategy of 'putting chest pain down to the vaccine and giving up running' is very risky. If you were scared (and that doesn't sound unreasonable), then the right thing to do at the time was to seek immediate medical advice, and that remains the right thing to do.

Please report back when you've got checked out! A lot of us will worry about you until you do.

Hi GoogleMe. Yes you are right, but I was scared and frustrated. It felt like cold ice cream going down badly and then pain and out of breath. I don't feel lethargic and normally feel great. It is just when I start to run. If I didn't run I wouldn't feel anything hence the headline. Just borne out of frustration.

Hi GoogleMe. No damage and all clear. My Chest pain was an allergic reaction to the Vaccine and just needed to rest out. Will be back Running soon. Thank you.

Some of us have experienced a week of extreme lethargy following the AZ jabs. However, as others have said, the chest pains are serious and must be investigated. Perhaps nothing to do with the vaccine itself, but we are told it takes up to 3 weeks for the immune system to kick in so your body would be under stress going running in that time.

My first AZ jab went without incident. I was a bit tired and didn't sleep well that night, but apart from that was fine.

My second is in a fortnight.

My partner only had a sore arm after her first Pfizer jab. The second one gave her a raging fever and lethargy that lasted for about 4 days.

You really don't know how your immune system is going to respond. For many a reaction to the jab is a good sign that the immune system has been primed for the threat of the infection.

But I definitely would suggest you get anything to do with heart checked out by the medics.

I think I'm with GoogleMe on this. There is always the chance of putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5. An example. A colleague of mine at age 29 has just been diagnosed with an eye stroke. Of course her family and friends all associated this with her AZ vaccine, as she would have, except she didn't have it!In your case I would seek advice from your GP about your symptoms and not assume they are a result of your vaccine. They might be, but they might not be...

Hi Jell6, I got 4, but no damage done. The Vaccine made me tired and the pain was an allergic reaction. Thank you.

Hi, I've done the vaccinator training and would recommend you contact your GP about the chest pain. It may or may not be linked to the vaccine but if it only occurred on exertion and not since there could be other causes. A cough is not a much reported side effect but that may also be connected to the chest pain so should be reported to your GP. As someone else has said post vaccination problems are not necessarily connected to the vaccination but should still be reported on the yellow card govt webpage. It is far better to have a consultation and get advice then you can hopefully restart running with confidence. Hope this helps. Let us know how you get on.

Hi! I am so sorry to see that you have been suffering from chest pains, I hope you will take the helpful advice of many of the commenters here and seek medical advice.

The Covid-19 vaccines are new and it is therefore difficult for the authorities to give advice about something as specific as the effects of vaccination on running. Many general side-effects, and some more dangerous ones, have been identified and you can read about them at the link I will post below.

I suggest that anyone who has just had a Covid-19 vaccine should carefully read through the information they have been given at the vaccine centre, and should plan to take a few days rest from running in case they feel unwell. It is also a good idea take it easy when starting running again, and listen to your body as we often say 😊 Running will always be there for us when we feel ready!!

I have edited the title of your post to reflect more accurately what you are asking - although I think you already have your answer! If you have any questions about this feel free to message me.

I wish you well, and look forward to seeing you post about your runs when you are feeling better xxx

Hi Roseabi. Actually I am glad you did that as I do not want to put people off having the Vaccine. My Running had gone from C25K to running 8K in about 5 months. After the Vaccine in March it hindered me and that is when I first felt the pains. After my 2nd jab I couldn't even run 100 yards! Just hit me like cold ice cream down my windpipe! Then struggled for breath. It isn't me. I love my fitness and I have a resting Heart beat of 45. Before Covid I was a Latin American Dance Competitor and won many titles. Running has been my saviour. Anyway. I have a consultation with Doctor on Wednesday. I did ring 111 but couldn't get through to anyone. I will keep you posted.

No damage done and was just a reaction to the Vaccine. My Heart is fine, and everything else! So..... I will re-start running tentatively in July and build up again. The Jab just made my body tired and I over exerted and was just not happy.

Question: does everyone see this response? Or do I reply individually?

Oh that's great news about your heart, thank you for letting me know!

Everyone does not see this response, but you can tag people to alert them, although they may not all realise they've been tagged:

type @ followed immediately by the username, and select the correct name from the blue drop down list that appears below - doesn't work in the HU app mind you!

Hi Anthony, the vaccine is really important so I think we just have to put up with side effects but please speak to the pharmacist/doc if concerned....edit: I see you have booked an appt, glad to hear it, hope it goes ok 👍😊

I had the Astra Z one 1st vaccine 18 days ago, felt so fatigued for a week, allowed myself a week off, then ran & was shattered, had another 5 days off, after sleeping 10 hours, napped last weekend in the day for 2 hours 😳

Thought I must be ill but then felt ok Tuesday, pleased to get back to 2 runs Tues, Thurs, due a 3rd this weekend but my heart rate has been sooo high, maybe 10/20 beats higher than usual. And it's high anyway so been into the 180s, reading your post too I'm thinking I need to be patient...and to expect more of the same next time!

I hope you start to feel more your normal self soon & gain confidence/energy for your runs 🤞

Hi Curlygurly2. Process of elimination at the moment. Not infection. Not a Virus. I had a Blood Test today and will have the results next Wednesday. It would be easy to be over-dramatic but I have to keep my council until I know for certain what the actual problem is. I don't know at the moment. I will post when I know. Thank you for your concern.🙂🙂

Glad to hear you're in in the clear. I think it's a bugger this vaccine, I've been very tired too, and lost a lot of speed. I took a few days off, but I'll take a few more off I think.
