Went out to do another 10 k today and had to stop after 2 minutes of running. I started with the usual brisk walk and the twinge in my left buttock made itself felt even more than usual. Once I started running my right knee joined in. I kept going for a couple of minutes to see if it would ease off but the knee just got increasingly worse and I couldn't run any further.
I made an appointment with a sports physio but its not until next week. In the mean time, I wondered if anyone could offer any advice in the mean time? Is it worth trying some stretching exercises or could that make it worse?
I'm really cheesed off as I was feeling like I was on a bit of a roll with this running malarkey. Maybe it will be all good tomorrow????

Oh no!!!! Can't offer advice but sending virtual hugs and sympathy. So infuriating. Good that you've got an appointment. Suppose we've been lucky into now. Take it easy 🥰
😲 😱 That's a real blow Fionamags . You have been doing so well too ☹️.It sounds like one injury could be aggravating the other. Go carefully and get some advice from the physio. 🤗
Oh no! Good that you've booked an appointment. Hopefully it will just pass, but knee strengthening exercises sound like the way to go! Plus bridges for the glutes maybe. I spend ages doing bridges because of the high hamstring issue I had, and they seem to be paying off.
I'm sorry you had to stop, particularly as you've run since your first 10k without any issues.
I would be careful doing stretches for the buttock pain at the moment, if it's connected with your hamstrings you could over-stretch, but bridges were recommended to me right from the start so shouldn't do any damage.
As for knees, I reckon the exercises on the NHS site would be safe for you.
Just to add, I got an online appointment on the same day and it was a reputable company and so helpful. You may have a physio you know and trust though! But suppose if you're concerned, an online appointment might at least allow you to get an idea about what is going on!
So sorry to read this Fionamags you were getting on so well, I can imagine how annoyed you feel. Brilliant that you've managed to get an appointment even if you have to wait a while. Can't give advice except taking it easy, but virtual 🤗 if that helps at all.
Look forward to hear how you get on with the physio.
So sorry to hear that Fionamags, big 🤗, hope it’s not going to stop you for too long, take care and keep your spirits up while waiting for your physio 💐🤗
So sorry Fiona, it’s gutting when you can’t run as I well know. I personally think you should rest until you see the physio you don’t want to make it worse. Hope you feel better soon. My good news is that my ankle is feeling much better since physio and ultrasound. She has told me I should be able to start running again in about 2 weeks.
So sorry to hear that Fionamags - I don’t think I can offer any useful advice on exercises but I hope the physio can help you next week! Fingers crossed for you!
So sorry to read this. The best advice is what you have already done in contacting a physio - and rest up until you know what your dealing with. It may be that the knee is compensating for the buttock? Fingers crossed that a few days rest will help it settle too.🤞
Is it sciatica in your buttock? I get all sorts of twinges and like you can usually run/work through it, I find when I’m laid in bed trying to sleep things start hurting again. Hope you’re back to full fitness soon x
I wouldn't try any exercises without physio's advice. My recent knee trouble led to loads of hip exercises.....and they worked.....counterintuitive but physio knew what she was doing.
A lot better. Knee is fine and just the twinge in the bum. Might try a gentle jog at the weekend. Thanks for asking.
Maybe a one off? But I definitely need to do some exercises to prevent it happening again so even if I'm back in action by next Thursday it will still be useful to get advice from a physio.
That's definitely the message I've been getting from reading posts from the experienced runners on here. That's why I'm wimping out and waiting for expert advice. Then its a good kick,? Up the backside to get on with that strength training.
Just seen this.. hope the physio can help you to sort it out.. I think the right shoes make a huge difference.. and plenty of rest plus lower impact exercise, especially walking.. fingers crossed for you..🤞🤗
I’m not running yet.. concentrating on walking at the moment.. currently doing a distance challenge for the Limbpower charity.. only aiming for an average of 5km daily so a total of 150km between 15/8 and 15/9. When I reach the target I might try running again but I’m not risking injury before that.. I’m still occasionally stalking the real runners on here though, to see how everyone’s doing, and for inspiration, and I will start again.. eventually..
I was told to ring for an appointment at the end of September. To be frank, I’m not confident that prosthetic improvement is possible.. although I’d love to be proved wrong..
Our local pool opens this Saturday so I’ve booked a couple of swims next week.. really looking forward to that..😊
Don't give up on prothetics just yet. There might be a solution just around the corner. Make sure you tell them that you are a runner and be very firm about this. All too often clinicians make judgements that are based on averages and a total ignorance of lifestyle and what our quality of life goals are. We need to tell them and then they can be amazingly helpful. But if they don't know what ur goals are they will revert to the norm. Any of us on here over 50 are not what they wd consider the norm!!!
You may know this already but just thought it worth flagging up as I am a health services researcher and this is a common theme....
That sounds like interesting work.. lots of research material for you, especially at the moment!
Prosthetics is a very unglamorous specialism I think, and maybe there is a shortage of qualified and experienced prosthetists.. it’s a demanding degree course only offered at Salford and Glasgow as far as I know.. I don’t know what they are paid, but I suspect it doesn’t reflect the level of care and expertise required. One particularly competent prosthetist changed my life for the better some years ago.. Quite understandably, but unfortunately for amputees, he has progressed to senior management in a different area of health.. I feel there is a rapid turnover of staff in the NHS which doesn’t help.
It must be an incredibly difficult task trying to make inanimate materials sit comfortably against delicate and damaged moving live body parts.. (how difficult even to find a comfortable bra!).
I’ve actually found prosthetists to be ultra keen to work on ways of enabling people who are motivated to participate in sport, and to find ways to justify spending for that purpose. A couple of years ago I asked for a swimming leg (and explained the difficulties of hopping or crawling on sand and pebbles, or in changing rooms). I was prescribed a state of the art prosthesis - by this time last year I’d managed to work up to swimming a mile a couple of times.
So, I’m definitely not giving up hope, just recognising that the possibilities are limited by circumstances, and that I’m lucky to be able to do things that many people can’t do for lots of reasons, not just amputation.. Especially ageing..
You’ve probably read Being Mortal by Atul Gawande? If not, I think you might find it interesting.
Not read that but heard about it - i must take a look. Good to hear how receptive the prosthetists have been! I didn't know there were only 2 training centres.
Fingers crossed for you getting to see somebody and getting a good solution.
