Budge up (please) - is there room for me on the IC?

“If it is painful to run then don’t do it” – unwelcome words from my osteopath. So here I am, feeling miserable and fearing I’ll never run again, seeking solace on the IC with my dodgy knee. 😢

Having completed C25K in November 2019, I was so proud that I’d stuck to a 3-runs a week schedule and although the self-doubt gremlins still lurk around, I always feel better for having been out. Absurdly I even get a buzz from seeing my running kit hanging out with Mr JB and son’s running/cycling gear! Add YWA since the start of the year, completing LEJOG6 with my dog, and a couple of virtual 10ks… YAY I’ve joined the fit gang!! But now what?

I’ve read many posts from people on the IC who seem well adjusted and calm about it – seeking alternative exercise and confident that they will return to running at some point. But if the issue is crumbling cartilage I’m not sure that I will be able to…. Its even stopped me enjoying the yoga which I’ve done religiously every day this year (YWA as recommended by many on Strength & Flex)... tho I can’t quite bring myself to try ‘armchair yoga for seniors’ as its title is such a turn-off but perhaps I should!

Well having got that self-pity rant 😰out of my system, I guess I’d best pick myself up, hobble out with the dog and make the best of the sunshine while its here.☀️☀️

Happy running to those who can 👍🏻– and good luck to the rest of us!

Dodgy knee? Has the Osteo given you any exercises to do?

I've had time on the IC too, most recently in January with a dodgy knee (which did flare up about a week in) and leaned on it in late March because I felt something not right in my ankles again and paused the running to stop it turning into an injury.

It's frustrating being on the IC. Wishing you speedy healing.

Thanks Nowster... nope. I’ve asked if there is anything I can do but he says the most beneficial thing is to do ankle rotations to drain away the inflammation which has accrued during the day. Important thing he forgot to mention - and I didn’t realise until my 2nd visit - was to do this with leg raised over heart!!🙄So I now lie on my bed for 10mins before lights out with backside against the headboard and leg up the wall!! Osteo thinks that’s a tad extreme but several of Mr Google’s Med-sites recommend it - so they must be right!! TBH An exercise or 2 would make me feel I could contribute to its healing - rather than moping around being mega grumpy! 😖😖

Is there any more room on the couch? I may be "just visiting" the IC for a few days. It looks like I may have been overdoing it a little the last few weeks.

Sorry to hear that nowster, hope your enforced rest does the job!

Oh nooo!! Having read some of your recent reports you were going really well and almost at your H-M goal. Am thoroughly impressed by that and I’m sure you’ll get there soon!!

I’m so sorry to hear that Jiveblue, just when you were feeling so good about your running! I hope that you’re not really crumbling and that the exercises give you some relief soon!

Thanks OGR. Yep I really do hope the grumbling knee can be resolved in some way - and soon. I see you’ve recently moved off the IC and wish you all the best in your return to gentle running.

I have enjoyed setting distance goals this year but probably pushed too hard to get 100km running in Jan. Having narrowly failed in March and had to write off April, the gremlins are back, goading me for even thinking I could call myself a runner!

But on my foreshortened Birthday run last week, out of pure defiance, stubbornness (and to have some childlike fun) I hoofed down a gentle downhill section 🚀and clocked 4.1/km (for about 100m!).

On reflection, 🤔I guess I need to nurse that spark, fend off the gremlins and chill on the IC like a well-adjusted adult!!
